Seems to be around a £50 price difference for these cards, which do you reckon is the best one to go for?

Going be overclocking it to the extreme, and want to play crysis. My moniter is 1280x1024 and system specs in sig...
 
From everything I have read at that res your better off buying a GT and a after market cooler. I guess it really just comes down to a money issue. If I had the cash to blow I would probably go with the GTS but if like me and money is an issue they snag a GT and a after market and goto town. You might look into a GT with the double slot cooler but im not sure how well they cool as I have no experience with them.

I know here in the US you can get a pretty cheap stock GT and a after market cooler for a decent amount cheaper than a GTS.
 
I had a similar choice recently. Opted for the GTS as it's much easier to OC with the better stock cooler. Plus, it has a bit more grunt anyway.

If money is tight, as mentioned, go for a GT with a good cooler. You wouldn't be saving that much though.

Agreed, GT here at that res, no problems at all, Crapsis runs poor on every single card out, and theres nowt you can do about it (even Crossfire/SLi/Tri-SLi can't run it well), so don't worry about it as its only 1x single game, unlike everyone else who is going around slating every new driver that comes out, and every card out, and card coming out as being utter crap and not worth buying because they can't run this 1x single game, they should play other games, as theres absolutey millions out there all our cards cut through with ease, which new cards will do also.:)
 
Is the stock cooler good enough to take GT's to thier limits when set @100%?

I have a Vf-900cu with sinks would that work well on the 8800gt?

Yeah money is kinda tight, so i think the option is obvious now. Will the GT at least run crysis on medium-high?

Easily so at 1280 x 1024. Expect 30fps + average even in later parts of the game.

The Vf900 does work on the 8800GT, but some models of the 8800GT come with a revised cooler that does a better job than the 'Mark 1' versions, so you might not need it.

The stock coolers, whatever the version, DO work at stock speeds, and they're fairly quiet. I've now fitted an Accelero S1 to mine though, and it has helped the overclocking no end! I can now run a stable 700/1750/2000 which does boost the performance a fair bit from stock. It's also silent now, and the load temps are below the idle temps with the stock cooler.

For just over a tenner, you can't really go wrong.

Forget the rest, GT is the way to righteousness, its cooling does not limit your overclock if you use rivatuner to set the fan speeds, my OC is 710 gpu and 2020 mem, never goes above 75c with fan at 50%.;)
 
whats the point of this everyone knows gts is faster but more expensive so its mater how much fps you get for your money. more amount fps with less amount of money.

The question is whether I should stretch to the GTS or not? Overclocked is there going to be much difference at all (both limited by same memory bus)?

As i have mentioned money is an issue, however i'm still prepared to stretch to the GTS if it's going to make a decent difference. What do you think I should go for psychas?

Having had both the GT and GTS the GTS is not worth the extra over GT.

Few more points in 06 but in games no real world difference with an overclocked GT.
 
Have owned 8800GTX/GT/GTS and used 3850 briefly, and would suggest you get the 8800GT.

Well, have settled on a 3870xt myself.

Not worth splashing out a lot right now, unless running super high res.

I use 1680x1050 by the way.
