Im building a new c2d rig(e6750, 2gb ram), and wondering what to get (320 or 640mb). i wont be going over 1280*1024.
From what ive read, the 320 is plenty, but im wondering with DX10 games coming up, would the 640mb 'futureproof' me anymore than the 320mb for future titles in this resolution.
Ta.

I game at 1440x900 and I got the 640mb for piece of mind and futureproof, allthough many people will argue that the 320mb is good enough but I'm sure on some benchmarks the 320 can fall ebhind the 640 even though it also beats the 640 in some benchmarks.

I would have said a 320MB one would be enough but after seeing STALKER using 514MB at 1280*1024 without AA I am glad I have a 640MB one.

Als Need for Speed Unlimited uses more than 320MB at 1280*1024

NFS Unlimited? aint that like a really old game in the NFS series?

I use a 320mb GTS at 1280x1024, upgraded from an x1800 XT 512mb, and this thing blows at this res, everything maxed out no sweat, Oblivion, fear, Dirt, Stalker etc.. etc... (aint got TDU so can't comment on that), id only get a 640mb GTS if your intending to keep it a while as it will last longer, i just got the 320mb GTS to tide me over till the next lot of cards. :)

So - In addition to this - Running at 1680 x 1050 - I assume the 320MB one would "do".

Not much different from 1280 x 1024 - Just widescreen - But would that increase the amoutn of mem used on the card by enough to warrant getting the 640MB version?

Do you use Full Dymanic Lighting with STALKER ??

320GTS does not run Stalker maxed out at 1280x1024 very well, i've built enough systems for friends using that card to know. ;) Builds where i used the 640GTS ran the game far better, but for 'most' other games the 320GTS is absolutely fine for res in question. :)

1280x1024 = 1310720 pixels
1680x1050 = 1764000 pixels

the difference is quite a bit more than you think. over 1/3 more pixels to render.... :)

Yes, i get about 50-60fps (v-sync on), it only drops lower to about 46 or so for about a split second when the floppy disk icon appears for it to load more in.

Is that with everything on max? AA/AF levels? I tried the other day, with only a gig of ram...got a massive 0 fps :mad: not impressed

Yes, heres a screenshot i took a while ago.

AA does not work in Stalker as everyone knows, thats maxed everything with 16xAF, Full Dynamic Lighting, as you can see 50fps, runs fine. :)

Sorry, force of habit asking bout AA lol.

Looks pretty good, i just hated the way it used to be 50-60fps looking one way, turn slightly and the fps was like 15 or so...put me off playing it, but ive not played it since the first patch, is it any better now?

Yeah it runs better now that its had a couple of patches, and also with having better Nvidia drivers to, i used to get some daft drops like that in the frame-rates in that farm where Nimble was, one minute ran fine in there, next minute didn't, ive also got that Float32 shader mod on there as well. :)

Theres a new 1.4 patch due now thats got Dual Core support, supposedly 10-15% boost from that as well, and also will have the latest Float32 shader mod in there as well.

I don't know how it runs further in though, as ive only been in the first 3x zones, couldn't get into the 3rd one proper as the ***** used to nail me with a hail of fire :D (at the start of it) but even when i was getting shot to **** there it was still running fine, im gona get stuck into it proper when this next patch appears.

My FP241W should be arriving sometime today and I'm planning to use 1920x1200 wherever possible. Is my 8800 GTS 640 likely to be able to handle most, if not all games present and (some) future at this resolution with maximum AF and a small amount of AA enabled? I assume AA would not be needed too much at such a high resolution :) Note I have a QX6800 and 4GB of memory to help it along a bit.

Coming from a 19" CRT here at 1024 gaming resolutions :D
