8800GTS or 7950GX2 for 2560x1600?

Ignoring the DX10 issue, which card would be better at extreme high res? Obviously the GTS is the better overall card. But isn't SLI meant to come into its own at very high resolutions?

Take a look here...

http://xtreview.com/review159.htm

Doesn't show a huge amount in it, most of the time they are scoring within a couple of fps of each other, alternatively one taking a slight lead over the other...

So overall you'd be better off with the GTS for the better IQ, FSAA + HDR and DX10... Tho the GX2 will overclock quite well and easily puts a stock GTS in the shade performance wise then... however most GTS will clock up to match or beat it then...

IIRC for that sort of resolution a single 8800GTX is considered the minimum for playable settings in most games.

TBH I would go for a GTX over the GTS and GX2 at that resolution.

Hades, what is your budget? At the moment between what you have suggested I would go for the GTS 640MB but if you can stretch to the GTX 768MB then it would be advantageous especially at that resolution.

You really need a 8800gtx for gaming at that res...

And even a 8800gtx will struggle with some games with all the eye candy set high..

frankly you need 2 8800GTX for that res, I use an 8800GTX at 1920x1200 and it can still be had by a game with the settings at an acceptable level (like 4x AA/AF and high textures etc).

Even farcry gives an 8800GTX a good workout at 1920x1200 with everything on max, or at least it seems to by how hot the water in my loop gets when I play it :)

so does even some simple games like TM united (drops below 50fps with all the settings maxed out at 1920x1200 with a 8800gtx)

Sorry to the OP for derailing the thread, but would a 7950GX2 be better than a GTS for 1650 x 1080 (22" widescreen), its £50 cheaper too!

7950GX2s are nice enough cards but you have to get them working right, mine was a bloody nightmare.

P5B delux wifi, managed to get over 10k 3dm06 with the cd driver in the box and a c2d at 3.6, updated drivers had me under 9k and never got back over.

Needed the newer drivers to get in game glitches gone.. it was a compromise to far if you ask me.

Thanks all. I was looking to get a GTX (or wait until the next round of cards). But I saw a cheap GX2 and wondered if it would be worth it. I think I'll skip it and wait for a cheap GTX. I don't particularly have an issue running non-native res so I probably won't push it up to 2560x1600 except on rare occasions. I'd take frame rate over pure resolution in general.

If you can get a GX2 very cheap - and don't want DX10 then its well worth it... I don't know about 2560x but my GX2 handles 1920x1200 no hassle and except in the few games that don't work too well with SLI I get very good performance.
