As the title suggests. Is it really worth it? Or could a GTS do the job?
I'm using a Dell 1907FP so super high resolutions make me squint a bit ;)
Really not sure what card to upgrade to. Any suggestions??? :p

I would wait till some decent games come out, i just got a 8800GTS (from a 7900GT), and its not really being tested by the current line up of games. Wait till somethink needs the extra power i say.

19 inches, can only do 1280 x 1024 right?

if so, you will only need the 320MB 8800GTS, between that and the GTX, untill you get to higher resolutions i dont think its makes much of a difference.

Yeah my monitor only displays those resolutions max. So I reckon you guys are probably right GTX would probably be overkill with the current power required by games.
Think I'm gonna wait until DX10 hits too before i shell out; however I'm itching to play fear smooth as butter on max settings :D

I use mine on a 19' TFT. Overkill perhaps, but I use bags of AA and AF, so everything looks super lovely at uber fps.

Being an old schooler I think i'm spoiled! I'll be looking for a nice 22' sometime this year tho.

For me fps is very important. I need 50+ with minimal dips or I get irritated :p

meh ive got a gtx on 1280x1024 (although i do plan to get a new 22 inch monitor next month), if you want about 15-20fps more on average in pretty much all games then get the gtx. Depends on whether you like playing things buttery smooth or just smooth ;)

Spend the money now and future proof, in a few months youll be able to play crysis and bioshock with stacks and stacks of AA and AF and you'll have silky smooth frames (or so us GTX owners hope) a few months after that when more games are released the player with the larger TFT will start to struggle a little while your GTX is displaying 36% less pixels more power is left for them extra FPS.

Get a new monitor first as monitors are very slow to be outdated. Gpu on the other hand are very fast to be outdated.

Just a bog standard CTX. 1600x1200 is definetly worth having, its much sharper. The 6800gs copes until the screen gets smokey then it halves the fps.

The next res down with AA works a bit better.

If you look at product depreciation you should find money invested in a screen now makes more sense

Thats some sound advice! thanks for the input guys!
Methinks I'm gonna get a GTS after all as I'm not really looking to upgrade monitor to anything bigger just yet, and can't really justify paying an extra ton when I prob won't need it playing at my max res. :D

I dont understand why ppl say a GTX is overkill one little bit, what about in a years time when a GTS just wont cut it anymore, is there really a thing as overkill when it comes to graphics and monitor, id say no but it just means ** setup will last longer without an upgrade, GTX and 1280x1024 here and I wouldnt change a thing.

Should someone with 800x600 monitor go for 8800GTX then?

Well as long as all there other componets are future proof for the time being why not. If your the type of person (like me) who likes to run all the bells and whisles that come with the lastest game, then as long as the game is optimsed then a GTX wont let its side down. Like said before in a years time the bells and whisles people with a GTS will be upgrading.

the only rule to obey when buying a new card is how much can you afford to spend? not buying one because it's too powerful is stupid. just buy it and it will last longer. :D
