What would be better from the above on a i7 860 and P55 mobo, im guessing the 2 4gb sticks would put a little less stress on the memory controller, sure there is a little premium to pay for the 4gb sticks but not as much as it used to be.

isn't the i7 triple channel? so you better with 3x Xgb?

The i7 860 has an integrated memory controller that can only deal with up to dual channel memory. It is the i7 900 series CPUs that can run triple channel memory, and to be honest the performance difference in real world tasks runs from small to un-observable.

To teh OP: +1 for the 2 X 4GB kit - its not much more expensive and puts much less strain on the memory controller - so overclocking is easier. Also, it allows you the headroom to add even more memory in the future should you need it.

hmmm is the new corsair vengence stuff worth the extra do you think, its only about £6 more yet runs at 1600mhz and has xmp with 1.5v, ive read a couple of reviews and seems to do 1800 with 1.5 and 2000 with 1.65, only thing is the huge ramsinks which may limit me in the future

I like the idea of 2 x 4gb. Massive problem nowadays seems to be big CPU coolers and big RAM heatsinks. I cannot fit tall RAM under my CPU cooler.

2 x 4GB I can use the other two slots (AMD).
