Hi,

My dad drives a Merc Sprinter long wheel base, not sure of the reg but its a few years old. We were driving down the road a few days ago and all of a sudden there was a rattling sound then every time he selected a gear there was a horrible grinding sound.

We drove back to his house where there is a garage next door to him. Its a small BMW garage so i knew it was going to be expensive but hes stuck in his ways and only goes there, plus i suppose its convenient. The guy had a look under the van and said that it needed a new clutch and flywheel.

They carried out the work that day as they mustn't of been busy and they also let him use an old escort for the day. He got the bill through today and they have charged £900  , has he been ripped off there or are Merc parts really so expensive?.

i wouldn't have been surprised if it was more tbh, some flywheels are silly expensive, the new type of dual mass wheels are starting to reach around £550 on there own.

Cheers, i just thought that sounded mega expensive. I suppose it was good of them to let him use the car.

Last time they serviced his van it came to just under a grand and they power washed and valeted it for him FOC to soften the blow :D .

Yeah that sounds pretty decent really. As mentioned, the DMF alone can be quite expensive but a big chunk of that cost will be labour. I paid £800 for a clutch/DMF replacement on my 320d a few years back and that was a cash price, would easily have been looking at £1200+ with a specialist.

Sounds decent, a clutch and dual mass flywheel kit can cost anything between 400-600 depending on where you source it from. Whilst it's not the most complicated job out there it obviously involves a decent amount of work - a pretty good price I would say.

Damn, yeah so it is and it looks like I was the 1st to bring it back. No idea how, as I didn't search for it or anything else and it seemed to appear on the main page. Apologies guys. Honestly don't know what happened there.

Happens all the time with the new software. One mislick rearranges entire forums, in this case I suspect you rearranged it by date by mistake.

In acme's chair.
I was quoted something like £700 for a clutch and flywheel on my old Corolla, so I don't think £900 sounds excessive on something with a Merc badge, unfortuantely!
