Building my kid brothers new rig over next couple of weeks, but we're not sure on which way to go with regards to graphics.

Do we get the 3870X2 or will the 9800GTX be on par or better? I'm leaning towards the ATi but as they will both be priced in the bracket I thought I should get some advice.

He will be gaming on a 22" or maybe a 24" monitor.

The 9800GX2 is much faster than the 3870x2 in pretty much every respect....it's also more expensive but whether you want to pay it is up to you.

I've had a 8800GTS 512mb and my current crossfire setup is much faster...especially when you start puttin on the AA

I'd rather have a 9800GTX, single gpu is always preferable to a multigpu solution especially when the performance is somewhat similar.

a 9800GTX is an overclocked 8800GTS litrally so a 9800GTX would not be a good choice especially if it will be priced same as a 3870X2.

So if a 9800 gtx is the same as a 8800 gts overclocked, what would an overclocked 9800 gtx be compared to? And as there has been no official review that can be trusted how do we know that nvidia has some trick up its sleave with the 9800 gtx.

I believe someone on XS tested the card against a standard 8800 GTS and clock for clock they were the same pretty much. I think the GTS was slightly better but within the tolerence of error to say the same.

Indeed so how did you come to the conclusion that the 9800GTX is not a good choice and will sell for £250 when you can pickup a 8800GTS 512MB for such a low price?

I was talking about price... If the 9800GTX is indeed hardly any different performance wise to the 8800GTS then anyone with any sense would go for a cheaper 8800GTS 512, only people who would get 9800GTX over an 8800GTS are those that are not in the know. I cant see the 9800GTX coming in at a low price and pushing the GTS's down to 100 quid.

Well I agree, I'd also buy the 8800GTS 512MB if they were priced £50-100 apart, but that doesn’t change the fact id take a 9800GTX over a 3870X2, it’s single gpu solution over multigpu solution always, unless the multigpu solution offers a substantial performance increase which the 3870X2 definitely does not. :)

Why would you want a 9800GTX?

The price has nothing to do with it.

The 8800GTS is virtually the same card.

The 3870X2 is a better buy over the GTS 512 running at ( 820/2300 -Mine) and thats from experience.

The 3870X2 is a great card that will only get better.

It's pretty apparent you don't know what you're talking about.
