A big thank you to the guy who owns the cafe near junction 24 of the M1 and the trucker network

Awww how nice, I'm guess he was of few words then if he just handed them over and left?

Either way, thats very nice!

Indeed, he literally offered me the tea and butties, asked if I was with anybody (which I wasn't, otherwise I can think of all sorts of ways we could have generated heat together), made sure I seemed like I was alright in the clothing I had (which I confirmed I was), after which he promptly drove off into the night. Perhaps it was a bit slower than that and it was simply my perception of timing due to the cold that made it seem different, but after delivering the food and drink he slipped back off into the night.

let's go all 4chan and track the guy down! but in a good way.

That's a pretty cool move man, I think I may have been past junction 24, but before 23, I'm not sure.

What has really happened is that you have actually briefly died and hallucinated the whole incident, you are currently in coma imagining living on your life.

Yours truly,
M. Night Shyamalan

lol...oh wait, ****, that's not actually funny and I'm even more screwed than before. Dammit!

Pacing up and down? Didn't you think of running and doing press-ups?

Well, if I knew a coach full of fit women was headed south on the M1 I may have torn my t-shirt open and shown off my non-existent glistening pectoral muscles in the oncoming traffic beams, but seeing as this wasn't a distinct possibility or probably in any way I decided that simply pacing to keep my muscles from seizing up would probably be the best thing.

That wouldn't help,it would just waste the energy his body needed to stay warm. Better off just wrapping up and conserving as much energy as possible in a situation like that.

I was in the lucky position that I knew help would arrive at least within a few hours, plus I was on a major highway so if things got really bad I could flag someone down if need be. So I figured it would be best to keep a little bit active so my muscles didn't seize up completely.

Kudos to the kindly cafe owner. I'd definitely recommend some token of gratitude, just to let him know that being a decent human being doesn't go totally unnoticed any more.

Definitely, if I'm actually able to track down which cafe this is, then when I'm back on wheels I'll certainly drop by to express my thanks in person.

That's his advertising. He knew you would come here and make a post about it. :D

Fair play, I'll sing his praises all he wants after that. I'm a coffee drinker and that was the best ****ing cup of tea and bacon butty I've ever had in my life! :D

Nice to hear but also a reminder to carry warm clothes and a fully charged phone in this weather.

So true, it was only potentially and hour and a half journey, but that turned into a 5 hour ordeal door to door in the end. I was sooo lucky that I had that blanket in the car. If I didn't I would have had to wave someone down for serious help if I'd have been that cold. And if I wan't on a major motorway that may not have been an option.

and to stop when the engine temp light comes on :p:o

This is so true, and I'm still kicking myself for not stopping. But it was partly the cold (ironically) and partly not wanting to let my family member down saying I couldn't make it that made me press on. That'll teach me to feel the pressure to deliver when my instincts and common sense are telling me otherwise :(

Didn't any police stop to check you're ok?

You know what, I did half expect that. But I guess none were passing that point of the motorway during the window I was stuck there.

I had a journey once where I nearly broke down when a part was failing and I some how managed to get home and the car cut out on the drive! I only had a pay as you go phone at the time, with no credit and a low battery life with no wallet, my lesson was luckily not learnt the hard way that day.

It really is important to keep a warm blanket in the car in the winter, hopefully this thread will help spread that message. :)

Having said all that I'm surprised there weren't any highway patrols about.

I try to stop and help whenever i can, far too many people think " **** it, it doesnt concern me, why is it my problem" and carry on.

Trouble is, on a motorway doing 70mph, by the time you've spotted them you've passed them, meaning its too late :(

Nice to hear stories like this. We came off the road after a wedding last year when the weather was bad and had someone stop. Then our boss managed to be passing on his way home and helped us out.

One thing though, how far away from work do you live. You said you will have to walk for a few months?
