Hi,
I'm having a couple of problems with my SonySTR-DE695S Amp.

First problem-
When watching "Underworld" on blu-ray the word "protect" comes up on the amp display and the amp just shuts down. If I switch the amp of, the movie play fine. When I play SD DVDs everything is fine.

Second problem-
While watching Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire on Blu-ray and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl on blu-ray I'm only getting 3.21 (the front speakers work) but the back speakers and the base don't. When I watch "underworld" and Rush hour 3 on blu-ray- I get surround sound.

I'm using the PS3 as a blu-ray player. The ps3 is connect to my amp via an optical cable. On the ps3 the sound settings, audio output settings are set to digitsl out (optical)

I had this problem with my old Sony receivers, got rid of them in the end (they were prone to overheating) I wouldn't have thought it was the optical connection at all. as for the 3.21 problem I think that would be down to how the soundtrack is being outputted by the PS3 via optical (downsampled?) & how the amp is decoding it.

Check that the titles coming through as stereo aren't outputting the Linear PCM soundtrack by default.

When I got my first few BR discs, I was amazed at the rich fullness of the sound - then I realised that this was the uncompressed soundtrack which my amp can only play in stereo.

I had to ensure the PS3 was set to output Bitstream over the optical, and then check the movie menu to select the Dolby Digital/DTS soundtrack as appropriate.

I can't comment on your first problem, as it sounds amp-specific, but I am rather intrigued to read that your first problem states that Underworld just shuts down the amp, but your second problem states that you get get surround sound with the very same title... perhaps you should add a 3rd problem - "My problems keep contradicting!" ;) Just kidding, I guess you get some sound before the shutdown...

A final tip: I played Ratatouille today, and it came out in stereo, whereas last time I played it was in full 5.1... I realised that fiddling with the amp didn't help, and all I needed to do was quit playback and restart the disc. Maybe it's to do with the way the amps recognise and auto-detect the sound format...

Hope some of the above helps a little...
