A couple of problems

Hello,

When i had my car (1999 1.4 clio) serviced a couple of months back it was mentioned that the a front wheel bearing was worn and should be replaced within 6-12 months. When driving above 50mph i get a whirring/droning sound coming from the front drivers side and i also noticed that i would get steering wheel wobble over 70mph, and i was wondering if the two are related?

A friend and i had a look at the car, jacked the front up and shook and spun the wheels to see if we could hear or feel the worn bearing, but nothing. My friend did spot that my "steering boot" was split, which is a part that supplies grease to the wheel bearing apparently?

So could it be that it is just the split boot and the bearing is in fact ok? But then there is also the steering wheel wobble to consider.

I haven't checked to see if any balance weights have come off, that would be a simple solution to the wobble.

Can anyone offer some wisdom on this please.

Thanks chaps.

get the CV joint checked.

i didn't realise the boot had split, and i continued to drive a few hundred miles until i got such horrific wheel shake that i couldn't really drive it anymore, let alone safely

turns out i completely destroyed the outer cv joint, and had to have it replaced at significant cost.

fix it asap

You could be on to something there, just looked up problems to do with cv joints and it matches my symptoms quite well. Will get it down to a garage asap.

I believe it is the cv boot. Just so i'm prepared for the worst, what can i expect to pay for a new cv joint fitted?
