A couple of quick questions about DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT

Hi all,

I have a very overclockable san diago CPU and an x1800XT 512mb pci-e card

Im not after SLI, just purely a VERY STABLE and HIGHLY overclockable mainboard, this seems to fit the bill thanks to its 4 phase power design, also I can place the card in the top pci-e slot and it gives me plenty of room around the PCI area,

Just a couple things though:

1) Iv downloaded and read the manual, it states all the different power cables that can be plugged into the mainboard (24pin atx2,2x8pin and floppy connector), saying its needed for SLI and recommended even if using 1 pci-e card

On the top right corner theres an 8pin power connecter next to the main 24pin one, it states I -can- use the normal 4 pin in that, however I was thinking could I get a 4 pin molex--->8 pin PCI-E converter cable and plug it into that ? would that work ?

2) I (think) I have a 420watt earnmax PSU [maybe a 470watt, carnt remember], would it be ok powering this board with:-,
- a san diago at-at least 2.8ghz (more if the boards that good :D)
- my X1800XT 512meg
- 2 gigs OCZ ram
- 5/6 3.5" hardrives (always spinning at full load)
- Fan controller with 4 120mm fans
- 4 120mm fans running off mainboard

and about 7 USB 2 devices attached to the system as well, what concerns me is, I would have to share power cables between a few devices, only leaving 1 cable that I will attach to my x1800 so it has its own power, but the rest of it, hardrives etc would have to up to 3 drives on 1 cable, this ok?

If anyone could clear these things up that would be great :)

Use a 4pin connector, it will be fine.

Buy a new PSU, thats gonna be struggling with all that.
TAGAN 580w's are nice.

or 3)
buy an sli-dr,it is a nice board too. no 8 pin to worry about and i think generally they are more stable under massive overclocks.

Hmmm interesting stuff, why is the sli-dr more stable ? I would have thought that the 4phase power stuff and more attention to detail on the expert would make it better? Also my xp-120 fits on the expert no prob, any more info would be great :)
 
Well, just what i've picked up off other forums, every seems to say the sli-dr is a bit more stable, yet the expert might overclock more.

I dont think the 4-way power thing is anything more than a marketting thing tbh.

But if you get either board a new psu will be in order.

So you might as well get the expert and a psu with the 8-pin

Yeah even if its a 470watt im thinkin not quite enough maybe, trying to find a modern website that lets me work out how much power my system is drawing, no optical drives which is a bonus, how much do 7200rpm disk drives pull down ?

It's a very good programme but it could be even better if it did the individual rails, I've e mailed the chap who made it so it might happen, I'm so loaded that I have a OCZ 600 and it's still not big enough at full wack I'm drawing 703 watts :eek:
