A & E on a Saturday night

How can they just fall apart into fragments? The foam ones I use stay in one piece even if I pinch a tiny area with my fingernail to remove them.

It might be the hard foam type, typically sold in boots. They are really really poor quality!

I use earplugs all day in work, hate the damn things! Mine come on a bit of string though!

or buy ones that don't fall apart?

This.

I used to pinch ones from the workshops at uni for nights when my flatmates were keeping me awake.

Little yellow ones you can get from screw fix. Never had a problem with them getting stuck as they expand once you take your finger and thumb off them. So unless you've squashed them down and stuck them in too far to begin with there is no chance of them going further in your ear. Infact I'd often find they'd fallen out come the morning.

Of course this doesn't account for the OP having massive ears.

Speaking of A&E and things getting stuck, I'm currently sat at Guys Hospital by London Bridge having got a pen lid stuck in my throat. So far every hospital member we've spoken to has laughed at me! Good start to the week :)

It's that exact type.

I use the orange ones you can buy on fleabay or from boots, they are designed to be single use, but thats just not cost effective, so they do get used for a couple of weeks at a time, which can lead to them breaking down due to repeated squishing/expanding to put in/take out of your ears, when mine got stuck it literally broke in half as I tried to pull it out. I'm just now a bit more careful about keeping an eye on them when they start to break down.

Well, that's it finally out.

After two torturous visits, I finally got seen by someone with a very steady hand and after getting about 100 bits of it out, it finally came out.

I won't be buying those foam earpugs again.

I used to use Moldex rockets but found those would irritate my ears if I wore them a lot. What's a good model/brand of reusable earplugs that you can wear for long periods?

Grats on getting it out.

Moldex Spark Plugs are the only ones that I use and they are really cheap too. Plus they don't fall apart and make my ears bleed. They are foam but as I said before, they are fine even after that's cats have played with them.

I wear one set for probably 4-5 days and I think my last bag of 50 pairs cost £8
