a fairly reliable car for about 1500 quid?

Yuk :(

I think i'll have to think of something else to raise funds as I didn't realise I would make that loss if I sold this car now. And it's not like I dont need a car, come 3-4 years time I can get rid & walk to work, but not until then, I need it to get the kids to school. Penance for keeping them in the best school when I had to move out the area. But still worth it as my son is hearing impaired & would get lost in the system in schools round here, so his TASS teacher said at the time anyway.

sadly yes

The person who sold the car to you sold it for a profit (after all he has to make a living).

You cannot sell the car privately for the same ammount of money as you bought it for, because there is no incentive for the buyer. He can spend £3500 on a 1.6 focus, which comes with a nice warranty, somebody to come back to if it breaks, the confidence in knowing theres some accountability if things go wrong etc... Or he can buy it for the same price from some bloke in autotrader who he doesnt know from adam, and could disappear the day after he bought the car leaving him with a rotter and no comeback.

You'd choose the dealer every time if you put yourself in the buyers shoes. So your price has to be reduced to reflect the fact its a private sale with no comeback and "sold as seen"

And if you're going to trade the car in, he's only going to pay whatever the last bloke paid for it, before he then put it on the forecourt at a higher price to make a profit ( and his living) out of it.

You're going to loose at least £500 by selling it.

Might have a couple of grand to pay out? Only might? How much?
When kids leave? Leave home or school? Can't they find another way to school?

Still not sure if troll tbh!

It might not be a couple of grand, wont go into details, but could be less than that now.
But no, it's 2 buses to school, my son is hearing impaired & it's a worry enough he will be able to get there on the bus when he starts 6th form in september, because I work certain hours during which he might need to get to school, taking into account these 6th formers have lots of free periods lol
I have already said to him we need to do a dummy run in the summer, so he knows what buses to get. So going on his TASS teachers advice I didn;t take him out of school to another nearer home when we moved, as 'he would have got lost in the system at our local schools' she said. She visits schools here too so knows how good or bad they are with dissabilities.

I am on a motor forum, I dont expect people to understand a single parent working & bringing up children

So you think because we like cars, we don't have the above to deal with? It's not just you that has these problems!

I've tried to look at this post in any way I can, and whichever way I look at it, you come across as being a total ****. Sorry.

Just look for a 1000 quid car with a year MOT and ask a garage to check it over quickly before buying. Keep the other 500 in a ''potential repairs'' pot ?

My first car, The Volvo V40 which I still have, I spent 1800€ on it, over the year of ragging and lots of miles and abuse it cost me about 50 € in stuff that broke, and about 250 in maintanance ( couple of tyres, brake pads, oil, etc). Of course it's a hit and miss but similar cars like, idk an old Mondeo or something Japanese like a Civic or Accord or Corolla should last ages. If you're handy with a spanner they usually cost bugger all to run.
