I've just noticed something that may give you all a nice long break at the end of April next year. Due to the vagaries of Easter being movable (I was raised a Catholic and I've still no idea how the guy managed to die any time between March and May ) the Easter weekend falls the weekend before the May bank holiday weekend.....

So, Easter weekend is Friday 22th April - Monday 25th April. May day bank holiday is Monday 2nd May. Therefore, book Tuesday 26th - Friday 29th off at the cost of 4 days leave and it's an 11 day break for the taking :p

I fancy taking an extended break, however I work funky shifts and get bugger all for public holidays excluding bank holidays. :(

Only if you get those days.

most companies take "public" holidays off your total entitlement.

No company I've worked for has done that  contracts have always been personal entitlement plus bank/public holidays... unless you're a shift worker or something.

Depends on the company but some people will get more days specified in their contract but they include bank holidays, others get less days but that figure doesn't include bank holidays.

This is going to be a bit of a pointless argument because no one can possibly define what 'most' companies do.

Suffice to say that some companies do include bank holidays in your entitlement figure (including mine) others don't :p

Though i'd be interested to know how many days holiday people get with companies that don't include bank holidays in their contracted figures.

Good tip. Although, I'm taking 6 weeks over the summer. My boss is already turning a blind eye over the extra week I'm taking as I only get 5 weeks holiday, I wonder how I should approach the subject of an extra 4 days on top of that :p.

30 days next year plus public holidays :D

EDIT: In fairness, 5 of those are days carried over as I've only used 14 this year.

Under UK and EU law you are entitled to 28 days holiday. 8 or 7 of those days are the public holidays you've mentioned.

They might ask you to work them, but it's at your discretion (even if they try bullying you into do it). If you do work them then you are either entitled to more pay or a day off at a later date.
