A quick couple of questions regarding CPU's

So, I'm a little new to the CPU part of my computer, my mobo is a socket AM2, and since I'm thinking of possibly upgrading my CPU at some stage in the future when I have a bit more cash in my wallet, I wanted to ask:

I read that AM3 sockets are compatible with AM2 sockets, is this true?

Also, a slight problem I'm having with my current CPU, my system only seems to be detecting one core, according to CPU-Z, and it's definitely a dual core processor, can anyone explain this one to me? It's really confusing :S

What make and model is your mobo? AM2+ are compatable but require a bios update if one is avaible. I donno about your 2nd problem tho. Someone else might be able to help you

Some Motherboards have a "downcore" facility. Check this hasn't been turned on to reduce your cores...

Also, is your CPU supported on your board? you may need a BIOS update to get that working.

What chip have you got?

Okay, couple of screenshots here to hopefully help you out, and with regards to "downcore" and BIOS updates, I have no idea how to do either of those so I'd need a hand, not much good when it comes to CPU's and BIOS I'm afraid :)

EDIT: This motherboard was actually fitted by a techie when my original died, so I know little to nothing about it, could be that he didn't update anything?

Hello Strychnine,

welcome to OcUk forums! :)

Make you read and understand the forum rules and please do not feed the animals! :p

When posting for help do not forget to include relevant hardware info otherwise we are all left scratching out heads! ;)

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Hehe I'm sorry ^.^' Yeah that's the one :) and RJC, you're pretty much saying in order to get a new processor that's really worth the investment I should look for a new board?

No worries, I try not to grumble too much especially with new forum members heh!

Yeah it looks like the board is too old to accept the new chips, if you wanna upgrade your gonna need a new Mobo + Chip (£100) . . . .you can always sell your Old Mobo + Chip to offset some of the final upgrade fee!

Yes, you can by AM2+ board which can take all current AM3 cpu's and re-use your memory or buy AM3 board and new DDR3 memory.

Would you have a budget in mind.

Well I'm a college student and currently there's no jobs anywhere so I make by on my £30 a week, but I don't really spend much of it and it's not like I have a specific time frame, but what would you recommend as the cheapest option and then perhaps a couple of alternatives at a slightly higher price?

Hope I'm not asking too much, and also I assume that by upgrading my kit I would solve my previously mentioned problem of only running with one core? :)
