A rant about the National Lottery

Right before I start let me just say that this could turn into a long post and while I have no problems spending money on the lottery I am a little annoyed about the tactics they are now using to generate sales.

This all centres around the new Dream Number game where all lottery tickets have a dream number on and you choose if you want to play or not, Well I used to play the Lotto Extra and seeing as this new game was taking its place I saw it as a opportunity to save a few quid a week. Its worth pointing out I was undecided at first if to play or not but come to the conclusion not to and just not check it.

The problem is though is they actually print your dream number on your ticket wether you play it or not, while this may not be a problem for some, the problem for me is I have a phonebook memory and have memorised it by looking at it once.
Obviously I wont be checking the TV show to see if I have won but even when you look in the paper or teletext, that number is going to be there.

I thought I would contact the National Lottery and see what they said, they claim they have done research and people wanted the number on it wether they played or not, to be honest that has to be a lie, I see it as a underhand way to generate sales as people will be more inclined to do it as they will be thinking, "what if my number comes up".

Its blatently obvious that the sales have been down for quite some time and advertising for them through the popular channels (TV/Papers) has had little effect on revenue, I just think its a bit of a sly thing to do really and there must be a "fair play" guide to how gambling should be done, at the end of the day you make your decision if to play or not by your own choice and by advertising, not be the fact that you have to because "what if".

Whats your views on it?

There a 7 digit code on your ticket, and they empty 4 or 5 sets of 1-9 balls ina machine, match the first one and you get a small prize, the more you match in the same order gets you a bigger prize.

Its worth noting, I dont have a problem paying the money for the normal lotto even though there is a small chance of winning, its more to do with the way they are trying to hook people into playing this new game.

I win at least £1 every week on the lottery by not entering it. Since the start of the Lottery, I've won hundreds.

I always fill in a new ticket every week even though I use the same numbers so it wont bother me as I probably wont even notice the dream number.

A small chance? Try 1 in a billion chance of winning...that's a tiny, itsy bitsy weee chance :p

Let's face it, your never going to win the lottery. Why even bother buying a ticket? I'd never waste my money on such rubbish.

If your gonna play the lottery, play the Irish lottery, smaller prizes but a much bigger chance of winning.

Optimists play the lottery.
Pessimistics moan about it.

I'm interested how you came up with the conclusion that it "has to be a lie" just because you don't agree with the market research they say they conducted.
Just because you see it as an underhand way of generating sales, it may well be that the higher percentage of people asked during the market research phase did indeed say they wanted it printing if they played it or not.

how about you try a 1 in 14 million
and yes they're very slim odds
but
you have as much chance as everyone else
and someone does win near enough every week
i waste plenty of money on other things so never mind sticking a couple of quid on the lottery every now and then

Me and my mates have won tenners on it before, and my parents have won a couple of hundred quid before, but as Shifty said, there's not much chance of winning really.

My thoughts exactly.

Im sorry but I just cant imagine anyone saying, "yes please Mr Camalot, print a number on my ticket that I will never use and serves no purpose to me at all"

That wouldn't have been it though would it. It would have been couched more like 'Would you be unduly affected if the number you weren't using was printed on your ticket'.

Don't forget they'll probably have to modify their printers to include this new game. Doing it so it printed some but not all would've cost a lot more.

exactly, and in fact since reading this thread I bought 2 lines for tonight. I'll be laughing if I win £10m :) (then drinking beer and laughing)

I agree with the OP, this does smack of a scheme to make people buy tickets "just in case". Personally I loathe the lottery. When it first started up (many moons ago) I won £93 on a Saturday draw. Even though I played for a total of three years I never won one single pound ever again. Nowadays the £2 my missus and I use to spend goes into a jar and every so often we go out for a meal and a few beers. Much better.
I would also question the fact that more and more regularly there seem to be string of consecutive numbers on the draw (e.g. situations like: 1, 7, 13, 14, 15 and 39). It all smells a bit fishy to me.
However, the thing that really gets my goat is that fact that Camelot run it. Back before it was launched Branson bid to run it and said that aside from operational costs he'd plow eveything back into charities. Camelot said they'd give money to charity but also to shareholders. Now, I'm sure that the process of awarding the license was strictly correct with no back handers what-so-ever  but it annoys me that money that could be helping people is going into shareholders pockets. Then again, with some of the daft decisions about what the donate to maybe thats the better option.

:/ Theres a diference between not spending and winning

I have spent £2 a week for about a year (so £100ish) and have won at least £250, must be lucky I suppose. :D

Even that depends on how you define "win".

That figure is for a jackpot. Most people wouldn't object to winning a few hundred grand, or even a couple of thousand. That increases he chances of winning a LOT.

The odds are, of course, still against you.
