iPod Stops AK-47 Round, Saves Soldier in Iraq

Kevin Garrad, a soldier serving in Iraq with the American 3rd Infantry Division, owes his life to his iPod after the the device stopped a round from an AK-47 while sitting in his upper left chest pocket.

While on patrol in Tikrit Garrad went around a corner only to be confronted with an armed insurgent. The two exchanged fire at point-blank range leaving the insurgent dead and Garrad unwounded but without music.

At short range a 7.62x39mm calibre bullet fired from an AK-47 would stand a good chance of penetrating standard-issue body armour.
Adding to his luck it is reported that Apple may replace the damaged device.

I read about this earlier and he was bloody lucky, think of the chances involved and it's astonishing, it could have quite easily been an ipod nano and he'd not be here today. Lucky guy & nice gesture by Apple :p

And now they ruined it my making flash disk ipods that don't stop bullets, but one has to wonder, how much is an American soldier's life worth to the US if they don't even bother outfitting them with better body armor?

Next in the Head lines.

"Apple To Make a Bullet Proof Ipod Vest for the US soldiers"

Two things:

  1. Why are you so bothered that people 'hate' Apple?
  2. It didn't save his life

Your right =/

You can see the bullet has gone through the corner of the ipod and out the other side.

^ exactly, dont know why everyone is making a hoo ha about it, sure the bullet actually got stuck sumwhere in the ipod, then lets all have a dance, but it went right through it, had he not been wearing armor, prob would have been busted.

great advertising for apple though, no wonder they are giving a replacement!

What on earth was he doing with an Ipod on patrol, you wouldnt catch me listening to an ipod on patrol, in the barricks yeah, but patrolling.

An interesting story none the less, but surely the force would still be felt upon the impact against the vest? you still get massive bruising even though the vest stops the bullet do you not?

There a reports of soldiers in WW2 not relising they have had a bullet sink into them until after the battle due to the intense rush of adreniline they got

Any armour capable of stopping an AK round at point blank range would be too heavy for a soldier to wear.

It has seamed to stop the bullet didnt it ;)

Granted, the armour ultimately stopped the bullet, but one would assume the iPod played at least a small part in reducing the velocity of it. Firing an AK47 bullet through an iPod isn't going to be like a hot knife through butter ;)

Ahh, didn't think of that, good point. Still, you'd have thought he'd have noticed the bruising before the i-pod!
