ive got a 7800GT Extreme. Downloaded coolbits last night and installed. The auto detect settings recommended 490mhz and 1.13mhz.

However, at these speeds my card rose to about 64 degrees which is in the yellow - i also started to get some ripping in the textures onscreen.

So i put it back to stock - im not a happy chappy as coolbits obvisouly detected settings which were too high!

Nothing wrong with 64c in my opinion!

The ripping, however, is a giveaway that it didn't like being overclocked at all. Yours and my cards are already overclocked anyway, just by the factory, so I'm not suprised you can't get much more. Mine doesn't shift much from stock before artifacting etc.

Did you ever see if it went into the yellow under load at stock?

Coolbits only has a stab at finding a 'safeish' overclock, and after that it's up to you to test it etc.

64 seems ok to me. Mine used to hit 65 at load when air cooled. Only 35 now i am on water. :D (Rad in a window)

The artifacting may have been caused by the 490 core. That seems high for a coolbits auto detect. Try dropping it to 475 and trying again. If that's ok try increasing by 5 at a time. 1.13 seems low for the memory too. Try increasing that slowly and testing in between. You may get a surprise that it can run closer to 1.20.

I don't know what 64 degree represents on the graph, but aslong as its in the green or just in the orange is it? that should be ok, but mine is at 55 load on a 7600gt

i didnt realise that is was still ok when in the yellow on the heat graph. Still, i got the ripping on the screen so i think its pretty evident that i doesnt want to be overclocked any more! ill try again tonight on a lower clock and see what happens.

Im on air and as far as i know, when running stock, the temp never rises into the yellow.........

ok, quick update - i all games on full whack, appart from Oblivion which struggles slightly. It would appear that with my card slightly over clocked, it is only Oblivion that experiences the ripping effect on the screen.

Also, for the over clocking, im only seeing an increase of about 100points in 3DMark 05 - so im guessing its not really worth it when you way up the possibility of damage compared to a small increase in perfomrance?
