Just a reminder to all motorists out there to check your antifreeze levels, now that it looks that the temperatures will be dropping into the negatives these long dark nights.

A cracked block isn't fun to wake up to!

Open up the expansion tank cap (or coolant reservoir) and look for a pink, blue or green liquid depending on the brand of antifreeze it has. If it's brown or rusty, have the coolant changed as soon as possible. Make sure the level is correct as indicated on the tank or dipstick and using a coolant tester (from a local automotive store, like Halfords), check the ratio of water to antifreeze.

Your local garage will also be able to check the antifreeze ratio and levels for you, if you'd like a little more reassurance in the matter.

Or, for the unscientific, drain a load of water from the expansion tank and refill it with neat antifreeze and run the engine for a bit to mix it up :p :D

No, just I've noticed the temperature gauge nudging into the single figures in these past few nights and at the rate it's dropping, feels like it'll be into the negatives soon!

fun fun fun fun.. i get to spend more time playing with the coldstart maps on my car! doh

I thought cars stopped being sacred of the cold years ago? Anyway because people drive Range Rovers it wont be a cold winter anymore anyway.

Don't think British weather ever gets cold enough for me to start worrying about the engine freezing, but I'm much more concerned with coming a cropper on icy roads.

spanish climate here we come :D

Last time it snowed it took me 8 hours to get 13 miles :(

For some reason halfway home I decided to take the back roads... which have stupidly steep hills up and down... a ford etc.. I have no idea what I was thinking!!!!!

lmao, good plan :D

I live at the top of a steep(ish) slope, and the road curves around to the left, with houses on either side. Even though every house has a large drive, annoyingly those half way down the hill seem to prefer leaving their cars parked in a staggered affect (as the road is not wide enough to park 2 cars opposite each other).

On a normal day it makes for an interesting slalom effect, on sheet ice it is somewhat more of a challenge, and with no TC and 10" rear tyres, I could end up in number 7's kitchen :D

It snowed a little here in Aberdeen last night, me being fully prepared had left all my "car stuff" in the shed at parents house, so didn't have any de-icer/a sound method to scrape ice off windscreen...
Took about 15 minutes to clear both front and back with the "use your hands" approach... :(
