A8, S Class, XJ or 7 series? help my dad decide

 :D

Next door has an XJ at the moment, it looks so... meh. It's just 'Some luxury car'.

Any of the other 3 would do it for me - truth is you can't buy a bad car in this segment, all are excellent, which is best depends on your personal prefernece. NOTHING has the image, presence, and makes the sort of statement an S Class does, but nothing drives like a 7 and nothing is as discreetly elegant as an Audi A8...

Remember, the 7 is no longer ugly - the 2005 facelift fixed the bangle-ness. It now looks like a larger, more modern E39..

You so nicked that phrase from TG :D

The only statement an S-Class makes to me is that you were predictable.

Technically brilliant, pioneering cars but just totally utterly boring, predictable and bland. Yes, I know the fact that it's predictable speaks volumes itself and shouldn't be a reason for rejecting a car but for me it just is. Never been the slightest bit attracted to Mercs and don't believe I ever will be.

What is it about an S that makes it bland that doesn't equally apply to pretty much everything Audi have ever made, though?

Dunno really, I just have a really irrational hatred of Mercs and for some reason find them staggeringly boring looking things.

If this was for a 3 series size car or 5 series it would be get the BM as its the best in the class, so I will recommend the best in the class at this size of car, and that is the S Class. New and full of the latest technology.

See, I really dont mind Audi's, infact, for me they have the most complete model range, but they are hardly exciting and dynamically styled in a way a Mercedes isnt, are they?

Told you it was irrational :D

Looked at objectively, you could level the bland, staid & boring criticisms at Audi and Merc in equal measure but for some inexplicable reason I love the way Audis look but find Mercs utterly dull.

I'd go with the Audi A8. In fact I did, but not a stinky diesel.

If I was buying a new car again today it would be a hard choice between an A8 and an S-Class.

Actually thinking about chopping the 4.2 in against a 6.0 W12 next month.
i remember you posting some pics of the computer inside your A8, seemed awesome.

you have the 4.2 then swb or lwb? what is the mpg like with it if you dont blast it?

SWB
I can get 30mpg if I really take it easy on the motorway. Average for 2 months was 20mpg with a mixture of an urban commute in very slow traffic and a few long motorway runs.
I don't care about fuel economy though. I have a fuel card.

The lack of dynamic styling on the A8 is one of the reasons I chose it. It attracts no attention whatsoever from anyone which for me, is important.

If I was to show up at a client in an S-Class they would think "Posh git" and this would impact my ability to do business. The A8 is understated and elegant.

The S-class is more exclusive than the 730d and the A8. The A8 does has a 4.2 engine on the other hand.

IMHO... the CLS for the win!

CLS is a class below....
i know its based on the e-class chassic etc - but look at it. when the s-class is just another big euro box full of gadgets (or is it already) the cls will become a future classic.
