after making some nice hardware choices the other day, i find my credit card repeatedly denied, so i have to take half the stuff off the order and use my switch card, np's ok everything arrived.

but i get a call from HSBC asking is i tried to use my credit card to make some purchaces on overclockers, it turned out they blocked the payment because it was too much money ... £400! so anyways they said they have reset it and i can use the card today.

so again i manage to select a few more bits to buy (weekly specials ;) ), to hopefully receive tomorrow...... BUT OOOOHHH NOOOOOOOO I CAN'T BECAUSE THE CARD IS BEING DECLINED BY THE VISA VERIFICATION THING .........AFGGGSJNSDGHGJDASNDL;FGKL;AFDGNKLADFGMKL'

so now if i ever manage to get the stuff ordered today or tomorrow i'll have to pay extra £10 postage and get the stuff later than i want, hmph

thanks for the protection HSBC

:o

surely 400 isn't that much?

was looking forward to building my conroe system this weekend :(

i had the same problem in a shop buying a £50 shirt!

we complain but then if the protection was not there we would be just as unhappy.

Ahh had the same problem with my Lloyds card a while back... They declined a payment on my card in a store... was very unimpressed with them. Politely told them to remove all the safety features...

Which to their credit they did, as the next month bought a car on it no questions asked at all. So they questioned a payment by me in a store for about £100 and the next month didn't raise an eyebrow at me spending £5000 on it... go figure!

Buying a car on a credit card is bad m'kay... only did it while arranging a good rate loan and needed a vehicle in a hurry.

Yes i had this last week, buying petrol from sainsburys. Card was refused and I had to phone up barclays. They wanted to check two items I had brought on paypal. One for £2.64, the other for £6.20.

They felt the need to block me for transactions less than a £10. They didnt just block that one card either they blocked all my barclays accounts.

Can't say I've ever had that problem, even when spending several hundred on one item. That's even with a student account.

A lot of fraudsters will use the card for very small purchases to check it's working, then *wham* you've got a bill for £500 worth of dodgy Croation Goat porn (the stuff with the Billy Goats).

Most banks/card companies have systems that can/will spot "odd" transactions, sometimes they will be very small value ones in quick sucession (say 2 or 3 under a tenner), other times it might flag an unusual purchase such as a £800 online order when you've never done such an order before, or an order from a foreign company.

I've had my card queried in the past because I was trying to pay a $10 MMORPG subscription with it, this was before I was buying R1 DVD's on a regular basis ;)

I had the same issue but for a bit more money - I rang Barclays and asked them to up my credit limit. They asked me what it was for and they said my limit had been raised. I then rang back OcUK and got them to put it through - it was declined........

Rang Barclays and they said they blocked it due to an increase in fraud recently..... They asked me a few questions and told me to do it again and it would go through. It did :D I was a bit confused that they blocked the transaction though as they did ask me exactly what I was going to buy and where from when I upped my limit

I am suprised the person you were speaking to at OcUK didn't advise you to ring you bank?
EDIT Unless you were doing it online :p

they should have looked at my HSBC current account to see lots of very similar transactions, or can they not check your other accounts?

can't win though, as pointed out already, it's probably for the best and i might be thankful one day.

yar i was online, never actually thought about making an order by phone :o

contemplating going to the shop on Saturday.

Just call that bank before making the purchase & they will allow it. No great shakes.

Its when you order £500 of dodgy Croation Goat porn and it gets rejected thats when its annoying.

I have a similar problem with egg atm they have called up twice to query transactions £120 and ~£70 iirc I have no idea why.

Just bypass Verified By Visa? It *should* be an optional system

It is until you sign up for it, then you are forced to input the password every time :(

I know that, but to register most websites let you bypass it - British Airways do not though :(

If it wont let you register then your inputting details wrong, the most commong are you enter part of the memorable word but the bank dont actually hold one for you.

If you ring them then they can tell you what the issue is :)

Mildly annoying if you've got a stupidly long password for it, but i'd prefer that to the hassle of getting new cards again.

I much preferred the chip and pin system Barclaycard were trying last year for their mastercards, you had a little reader that you put your card into and entered the pin to get a one time code - much easier than passwords but I guess slightly less secure and more costly (not to mention you couldn't use it if you didn't have the reader with you).

I've heard rumours that Barclays will be using that sort of system with their online banking next year though.
