build this system about 6 months ago, already got 8gb of ram, my cpu is overclocked to 3.4 is there any other proccessor thats a cheap upgrade to hit the 4ghz or past or should i just buy watercoooling stuff and get it to 4ghz?

3.4 on air is already fast, why worry about another 400mhz, you would not notice the difference?
Secondly: there is no guarantee Your chip will do 4ghz and so the cost and time of upgrading to water may be wasted!

If your rig is currently handling everything that you run id leave it as it is, 4ghz q6600's are extremely rare, i managed 3.8ghz from one a while back, no real difference in performance tbh from 3.4 or 3.6ghz.

I have the the abit ip35 pro and a E8400 oc to 3.6, and no matter what I do burntest fails at 3.8, I think its either the mem being oc by 22mhz, or its cos im using all my memory slots (8gb)

I had an Abit ip35 pro and a q6600 and I found that 8gb ram severely hampered my overclock on my q6600

I had a good early low vid q6600 which could do 3.85Ghz with 4gb ram but would max out at 3.5 ish with 8gb ram.

Same would apply if you went for a q9550/q9650 as my q9650 overclock gets limited if I want to run 8gb ram which is why I have gone back to 4gb for now.

3.4Ghz out of a q6600 with 8gb is not to be ashamed off. Enjoy it and don't bother upgrading. If your temps are fine, forget watercooling as well. Unlikely you will increase your overclock unless you watercool the whol mobo as well. Then you might get 200 to 300Mhz more (or not) at best and hardly worth the expense of all the watercooling rig.

New to all of this, but the theme here from you guys is 2-400mhz will not be noticed - but its quad core, 4 * 400mhz = 1600mhz extra.. shouldnt be ignored surely?

Youll only notice the difference in benchmarks, when it comes to real life performance the difference is so slight it's not really worth it, im primarily a gamer and ive had 2 quads clocked at 3.8ghz, made very little difference in games.
