Hi,

Just about to install Vista Ultimate. I have the 32bit and 64bit DVDs.
Which one to install?

The spec of the PC is:

Pentium D 3.6 (I think this is the dual core before coreduo)
2GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 285 (128MB)
250gb Sata HD

Just gonna be installing Office some DVD burning software, video codes, viewing hd content and just generally learning about vista.

Any obvious reasons not to install the 64bit version? According to the sticky the performance is negligable.

Edit: I have installed the 64bit version and now I am going to install over it (its an upgrade disc) But the one I install now will be the "real" install, if you see what I mean. The windows experience index is 3.0

I'd go with the 32bit one as I had to make this decision ealier and had driver problems on 64bit so I installed the 32bit one instead and it works a treat.

I went with 64 bit version, have all the drivers and no problems with my software, personally 32 bit OS is now dead for me,never going back to 32 bit.

I am just updating the drivers now on the 64bit one before I decide which version to install over it. Seems fine so far, but I guess it is hard to evaluate until I install some 32bit apps. Reading around some people say there is no performance difference between running native 32bit and 64bit with 32bit emulation for apps.

i brought vista business retail which Included 32-bit DVD and info on obtaining 64-bit DVD.

If i obtain the 64 bit what will happen about the licence key? will i get another one with the 64bit or will my current one only be valid with the 64 bit once it has been install??

i would say go for 64bit... im using it and it runs great..

theres always a "but" lol... if u like playing games some games won't run on it. i found a few that won't run on it like Scarface: The World Is Yours, and Shrek the Third the Game...

Your key will be valid for both versions.

thanks. i wasnt intending to run both at the same time. i am currently using 32 bit but will probably move to 64 bit at some point. i just didnt want to obtain and install 64 bit and not be able to go back to 32 bit if needed.

Cheers for the info, I have installed the 64bit one today and I am fairly sure the VGA driver is not installed properly. Now I tried to install the 32bit over it as an upgrade it wont let me!!! (cant upgrade 64bit to 32bit, sounds obvious now!)

I am gonna have to do a clean install of xp or vista 32bit and then install vista 32bit over it!!! Save it for the weekend.

Edit: Just reading the other threads sounds like I asked something that is asked very often!! I'm more a console games and hardware man so am new around these parts (thats my excuse anyway :p )

They are only if you are using a system with locale US. If you are using UK then you follow the link on the UK page, which gives you page cannot be displayed. But if you try to look for the 32 bit driver that downloads fine.

Try to find the driver from www.nvidia.co.uk it is missing from their server definitely.

This is the only reason I will move back to the 32bit version annoyingly, I anticipate issues if I don't have the correct GPU driver loaded, in the future.

You can get drivers from any Nvidia website,I have done that more times then I care to count infact I get my drivers from Nvidia.com 99% of time,Nvidia.com is their main site anyway so not surprising you'll find them there.

Your reasoning is very poor and not valid, give them a try.
