Acer Aspire 7520 Gemstone 17" laptop

Haven't got a 7520 but I have got the the C2D equivalent model the 7720.
Admittedly I am not a gamer so don't care about fast 3D graphics but for my usage, (general office, internet and some graphics), I find it very good and it runs Vista well.

The Acer gemstone designs do seem to be quie thick which means that you have to be careful selecting laptop bags, (I se a Crumpler Sticky Date bag and it just fits).

I've just tried playing back a divx encoded avi file and its fine on it, perfectly watchable (although this would depend on you encoding settings). The sound output on the 7720 is, in my opinion, very good ... its supposed to be "dolby digital live" and music actually sounds like music instead of the tinny rubbish you normally get out of a laptop.

thanks

one last thing does the Wifi button button need drivers installed before it will turn wifi on and off ?

And whats the 4 way scroll button like as i've never seen it on a laptop before.

Can't say much on the scrolling as I use an external MS wireless notebook mouse as I dislike trackpads. Its just a button between the two left and right trackpa mouse buttons which allows you to scroll left-right/up-down

With the wireless button, I haven't reinstalled the OS on here so I cannot say absolutely for sure, but on previous Acer laptops with this, (I had a Aspire 5024), this was done through ACPI (with linux you had to install the acer_acpi kernel module in order for the button to work and without it working you couldn't turn on wifi).

bah!

thats a software switch i was hoping for a hardware switch that worked independently of the software systems to make life easier for linux and hybrid os.

Last question i promise :D ( Don't make me sign any thing )

Whats the screen like as friend got a packard bell 17" dual core and it is awful with light bleed on black screens and it' almost impossible to read the light grey text on the grey windows boxes regardless of the screen settings.

Personally I really like the screens on the Acer laptops. One of the reasons I got a second one of their laptops was that the screen was so good on the old 5024 model, (15.4").

The screens on these are glossy which some people don't like but I find them fine and don't have any issues with reflections where I normally use the laptop. I haven't noticed any light bleed or issues with reading text colours on other colours but I can't say that I have looking for it.

The amount of fan noise varies a lot dependent on what the system is doing. If the system is not doing much, e.g. a bit of web surfing over wifi ... things where the CPU is down clocked, then its practicaly silent but if the system is ramped up to full speed and the system is working hard then the fan noise can get pretty high.

My Acer laptop has broken 4 times in about 16 months.

It has been back for repairs 3 times.... new screen, new mobo etc... so pretty much an entire new build.

It's still broken :D

Buy at your own risk  - my friend bought an acer laptop at the same time as me for uni too. His has also broke three times too and it has been back and it took about 1 month for them to send it back to him ! Well he has now binned it and bought a 1200 pound desktop instead - a wise choice.

My old Acer Aspire 5024 is now just over two years old and hasn't had any hardware issues, (other than slight overheating which is a known issue with this particular model due to trying to squeeze in a AMD processor and ATI X700 graphics). I'm expecting a new battery for it today to replace its existing one as thats only holding about an hour now.

I also know several other pople who have had Acer laptops without issues. For balance I have also have a Dell 3800 laptop which is still going strong after many years and know people who have Dell/Asus/Apple/etc laptops, some of whom have had issues but most have not. But my work D610 is getting more dodgy by the day.

I think with laptops sometimes you are just unlucky, or hit a specific model which has a design issue, (or was built on a Friday afternoon). From what I have seen and heard I would say any mainstream laptop maker is as good/bad as any other :)
