is it so they show up better in media centre?

If you have

Predator.mkv and then Preadator.jpg, it'll show the jpg as the preview iirc

or if its in explorer, the haali splitter has an option to do this.

Also, You can add image attachments at MKV files by using MKVtoolnix (mkvmerge GUI).
WD HD TV currently supports image thumbnails only for MP4 type videos and mp3 type audios. Hopefully they add MKV support at a future SW release.

Boxee runs off and gets the box shots for you i think and a plug-in for xbmc does the same. Just to save you scanning in your blu-ray case art and tearing it in the process rendering it less valuable.
