Hi guys, just got a phone call from the dentist telling me it would cost 20 pounds to get a copy of my dental notes (about 5/6 pages at most).
Im REALLY annoyed but i need to change my dentist ASAP (He wont refer me to the orthodontist at the hospital to get braces fitted and i need to sort it out seeing as im 18).
Is their anything i can do to combat this or generally peev the dentist off.
****** noobs..

BTW im a student aswell, with a weekend job. I COULD pay for it but seriously.. 20 quid

Dentists these days are akin to daylight robbery. They'd strip you of your clothes and steal your shoes if they could.

I've only ever had one really awesome dentist, but unfortunately not with him anymore as he no longer takes NHS patients.

Under Data Protection Act the maximum fee levied to obtain copy of any of your own records can be up to maximum of £10 regardless of volume or number of pages. Remind the good doctor he has legal obligation to retrospectively reimburse the difference to any previous customers for the past 6 years as well.

That's only the case if the records are held entirely on the computer, it's 'up to £50' if the records are held in part or completely in hard copy rather than electronically.

Here's a useful guide:

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like i will have to pay the 20 pounds then... :(
or forget it and make my new dentist make new records and find my orthodontist

You could just change dentist without transferring records. Pop along to your new dentist and sign on as a patient, they don't ask for your previous dentist or records as far as I'm aware. They didn't ask for mine when I signed on with a new practise last month, just started off a new dental record...

Welcome to the real world mate, sucks doesn't it.

I remember getting a admin fee for sending me a copy of my medical doc's. cost me £45...

3 pages....

Incorrect
Notes may not all be held on computer
Radiographs cost more to duplicate

£20 is reasonable

-edit
all dentists 'should' make their own new chartings anyway
unless there is somethign specific you require your old notes to be available for, each new consultation is treated as if a person has never been encountered before, no matter what notes they bring with them
Unlike NHS medical records, dental records do not follow the patient, a dentist is charged with keeping and maintaining copies of his own notes.
