I think AD Explorer within the SysInternals suite does some things better than ADSIEDIT, including searching!

apache directory studio lets you do pretty much anything in AD (and any other ldap source). depending on what you are doing, aduc in in windows 7 (connected to 2008 and upwards domain) has an attribute editor tab that you can use to make manual changes too.
