Ok,

Everything I buy is generally decent, well thought out and well researched. Apart from Wireless Routers it seems.

I think i've researched them then i get a load of chuff.

First up was a Linksys WAG54G V1 and I bet I don't need to tell you any more about that one.

Then came the Netgear DG834GT, that cant hold an ADSL connection for longer than 30mins and has an unanswered 24 page long forum thread on the netgear forums.

Then from work came a cheap Linksys HG200, network drops out after about an hourish.

I'm pulling my hair out here, the Netgear is being RMA'd to OCUK - could someone please suggest a RELIABLE wireless ADSL modem/router that will not drop the connection/network every hour and that does not get scared of big file transfers between computers.

Thank you ever so much.

I'm off for some Camomile tea.

Cheers for your reply mate - sorry forgot to mention it has to be from OCUK as they are exchanging the RMA

I had the version 1 linksys WAG54G, awful I know, however I sent a letter complaining to linksys about how crap it was and they sent me version 2! Have had it for a week, seems to be working well and transferred 4gb yesterday and the strength stayed a very good with a speed at 54, maybe you should try RMA'ing your wag54g if you still have it.

same here had v1.2 lots of wireless disconnections. have now rma`d it and got v2 no problems so far

Cheers for the replies chap - alas the linksys has gone to a better home - free from the burdens of file transfer over 30mb.

Has anyone used the Zyxel routers?

Yeah. Have had a older version of the 660HW and more recently had a 662HW. Both were pretty good, although the 662 was completly bullet proof, although its more of a business class router.

If I *had* to make a choice out of the once stocked by OcUK it would be between:

Netgear DG834G - pretty stable these days and with recent firmware now has VPN endpoints and other cool features which are missing from the dire GT version. Uses the TI AR7 chipset which IMO has less issues than the Broadcom one found in the GT. Certainly doesn't overheat like it anyway.

Zyxel 660HW - no personal experience of the current version, although Zyxel standards are normally pretty high and generally a cut above Linksys/Netgear et al

Linksys WAG354G - which according to feedback I've seen is nothing like the dog that was the WAG54G.

Another vote for the DG834G ;)

I've had it for over 2 weeks on a VERY, VERY bad line and it's as solid as a rock!

Cheers,

SW.
