I'm currently gaming on a 970 at 1080p and have that serious upgrade itch.

Now as I see it I have a few options, my first though is to buy a 1080ti and a 4k monitor within about 6 months time.

Or sell the 970, pick up a 1070 now, shine on the 1080p until Volta hits and make the jump then...

What do you guys think?

Personally leave the gpu change until you have a screen higher than 1080p, the 970 is still fine for 1080p. Though a 1070 is amazing, it's also pointless to buy now with the 1070Ti due so I'd see how that effects prices

As above.

I went and bought a 1080 about 2 months ago as well as a 144hz 1440p monitor as an upgrade from a 970 and a 60hz 1200p monitor.

If your buying now the 1070Ti (Vega 56/64 if priced reasonably) will be that upgrade but like above only worth it if your at a higher resolution or refresh rate.

Honestly if the games are running OK stick with what you have as Volta will probably be a better longterm bet than Pascal.

OTH,if you can't wait, look around for a cheaper GTX1080 - they have dropped as "low" as £440 IIRC,and I can't see the GTX1070TI being much cheaper. I would have mentioned Vega56 as an alternative but the pricing seems a bit too high for my liking!!!

Im still doing ok with the 970.

I do have a 4k screen but at 1080p the 970 is fine, and 1440p is ok in some games.

I will get 1080ti performance for a price im willing to pay and still waiting.

If a game I really want to play needs more than the 970 I will upgrade, but that depends on your choice of games

I just upgraded from a 970 to a 1080 and I'm seeing big performance uplift. I have a 1440p monitor so having that extra horsepower really helps maintain smooth frame rates.

Volta could be "released" in February but these will likely be Founders Edition models again and over priced. We'll be waiting even longer for the likes of ASUS, MSI, Zotac etc to start releasing their non reference designs.

Buy when your games no longer play the way you would like them to.

Don't base your buying decisions around when the next gen cards will be available as this often leads to a very long wait while your games play poorly.
