Advice Needed - Flickering in Motorstorm

Hi Guys,

Wondered if you could help me. Recently bought an LCD display. I had a couple of problems with it (one of which i believe to be the HDMI connection).

One symptom i noticed that when playing some of the races in HD (for example a level 3 mudpool race on bikes) there is a periodic kind of flickering, hard to describe, but feels like maybe a frame was out of sync and a horizontal line appears on screen. This doesnt happen in all races / games etc, only on some courses. It also doesnt appear when played over SCART.

Has anyone ever noticed some kind of flickering over HD. Was wondering if it was just the game or if it is definately my TV.

Cheers for any advice. Dont want to return a TV if it's not responsible

How much was your HDMI lead? I know it's a digital signal so shouldn't really make much difference but the cheaper ones can cause problems apparantly as they have less sheilding and inferior build quality.

First check the HDMI cable, chances are it's that. I generally always buy very good cables so I rarely (actually never) have experienced stuff like that via HDMI or Component on my TV's. Try getting a better cable if you bought a cheap one.

If not, it's either your PS3 or your TV. What TV do you have? If it's a cheap TV it could be that.

The HDMI cable was the logitech one sold by HMV. Cost me 40 quid (probably over priced, but i needed one). Is that a good one or a cheap one?

The TV is a new Samsung F86. Got some flickering in the menus at first (which seems to have gone now) so i assumed it was the HDMI port.

When played on another TV (not HDMI) didnt get the flickering so i assume it is the lead or TV, but dont want to replace a non-faulty TV, and dont have another HDMI cable to test it out

arrggh.

As a slight extra note. The cable is 3m long. Could this have an effect as i've noticed a lot of cables are only 1m?

Sounds like image tearing from your description.

Did a google search for image tearing and after reading aroudna bit, I would say yes it is image tearing i am seeing.

Next question. Is this a fault with the TV or cable or PS3?

It depends how bad it is, but theres probably nothing wrong with any of your kit, just something HD gamers need to deal with.

Cheers for the info Inoshishi. Has any other gamer noticed image tearing on Motorstorm?

I did notice that when i told my PS3 that the tv only supported 576 and 1080p when i played motorstorm (720p) the image quality was worse, as i guess the ps3 output the source at a lower res (576). But the image tearing was gone.

When i told it the tv could do 720p and 1080i, the quality increased (as i guess it output it at 720p) but the tearing came back. So i'm guessing the tearing is coming from the tv showing the 720p image at 1080p.

Wish i could find myself some more people with the same experience. Or I way just get a replacement tv see if the same thing happens on that.

Motorstorm is a sod for tearing. I've had it on all my PS3 games except Virtua Fighter 5.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma has the worst tearing for me so far on the PS3, I didn't really notice it much on Motorstorm, though I know it was there.

Not sure why but tearing seems less when running 1080i rather than 720p\1080p.
