I dont know much about motherboards and most pc hardware and i am looking to build a new gaming pc for myself soon. One of the problems is i dont know much about motherboards and was hoping the people of this board could help me out. Price is not an issue atm and a few suggestions would be great. I need help with the following:

(for a gaming rig)

  • Any features or specs i should be looking out for on motherboards?
  • Any reliable brands or evil brands i should avoid?
  • Any useful review websites i could refer to
  • picking a motherboard for a gaming rig which will be using an FX57 (or if there is better, suggestion is well appreciated)
  • will be future proof for a few years :p

Really am going into this a bit blind lol.

cheers for input :)

If your unsure as to PC Hardware maybe you should think about buying a pre-built system from someone like *insert name of company you like*. ;)

If not then you need to do lots of research into what you need the computer to do. Learn all the terminology you can and then sit and compare all the Mboards in your price range.

Alastair79, what are you on about mate.
Firstly I'd remove the competitor link and secondly we were all unsure about hardware at some point.
Building your own system is the best way to find out and a lot cheaper than getting a pre built system. That's why the op has asked for help.
To Slyman, are you after a full build (and if so what is your budget) or do you have some kit already.

FISHGUTS your right, I must be getting old, nothing better than plunging head first into the world of custom PC's.

Motherboards are completely personal choice. I'm not a massive overclocker so I will go for something stable with plenty of features. Have used Asus, Gigabyte, ASRock and Abit at work and home and have found that I like the Gigabyte's the most simply cos' there good value and easy to setup. If your mad on overclocking I hear that DFI are good wit plenty of potential.

Im after a fullbuild, probably a budget of £2500 and could push it a bit. I dont think i will be overclocking for a while.

I would read up on how everything on a mobo works and the terms etc, but i just dont know where to find out that stuff lol :(

And i told myself i wouldnt get pre-builds after getting it from that dreaded outlet store thats around the UK. Thats why i want to change my current pc :D, its dying on me.

As I have been told you can't put up links to other websites, but got to google and type hardware reviews. The top two sites it comes up with are very useful and should give you some idea as to the features you would like to have. With £2500 to spend you should future proof yourself for a little while, well a couple of months anyway ;)

A good starting point would be to look at the guide in general hardware

I would also post a question in the general hardware section explaining your situation and asking for a full spec for £2500. This will give you a good starting point
Sorry I can't do it myself but I'm at work at the moment and any way there are peeps that know far more than me.
It might als be worth looking at the ocuk bundles.

hehe, thats what im planning on doing, but thats also why i need advice too :P. Dont want a beast sitting here dormant in my room or not to its full potential because i jumped the gun a bit and bought incompatible parts etc :p

Still choosing between a few motherboards, then ill choose other parts and then ask for a spec in general and compare em :)
