advice on claiming job seekers allowance.

As someone who suffered from depression myself not too long ago, not working and just laying about at home is the worst thing you can do.

I highly recommend getting a hobby, do some exercise you'll feel 10 times better about yourself and it helps shut your mind off.

Also quitting your job you wont be able to claim benefits for 13 weeks so that would be even more detrimental to your health. If you were only recently diagnosed then chances are any medication given hasn't taken effect yet, this can takes weeks or months. If you go down the route of being signed off work, do not lay about. Do anything and everything you can to keep active and occupy your mind.

PS Man up and get on with it, no seriously the longer you dwell on the negatives the deeper into depression you get.

Found this from the Department for Work and Pensions.

Not sure if it's up to date but I quoted a part -

Things that may affect your claim

The reason your last job ended

If you left your job

If you chose to leave your job, we’ll ask for the reason why. You need to show that you had ‘just cause’ for leaving. Your last employer may be asked to comment on any statement you make.
Jobcentre Plus will make a decision based on a number of factors, which include whether it was reasonable for you to take the action you did.
If we decide that you left your job without just cause, you may lose your entitlement to Jobseeker’s Allowance from one to 26 weeks.
If you were dismissed
If you were dismissed from your job, we’ll ask your last employer for the reasons. You will be able to comment on what they say.

Ruined? as if it was ever not this way.

Shut the hell up, the OP has problems to deal with, I cannot personally relate due to not knowing what depression is, but I can still try.

Also just because the JSA is seen only in the light of chavy families and such, doesn't mean that people that it is designed for to be berated by *******'s.

He is wanting to fraudulently claim JSA because he is bored/lonely at work. My job gets me down sometimes but I just get on with it.

Why should he be subsidised because he THINKS quitting a job and going on benefits is going to help.

Get a bloody grip, apply for new jobs while at work, see if another job helps. It may do nothing or make it worse.

My Dad is on anti-depressants, did he quit his job due to back pain (he is disabled and now has chronic back pain in later life because of his disability), no he didn't, he got morphine and anti-depressants and is much happier.

Seek medical advice, not a way to cheat the system and be a scrounger, that is the worst thing you can do

Bit of a harsh thing to say to someone who is depressed Oxy, the last bit that is

It just angers me, he seems think that he is down and that quitting a job, loosing all his money, to get £70 a week with the druggies is going to help.

How is he going to explain this in an interview?

I quit my job because I have a mental illness, I wanted to be on benefits and make my life more awesome. Can I have the job?

LOL no son, next!

if you really cant hack it then go on the sick at work like normal ill people do

you might hate the job (most people do) but you will be even more fed up sat at home skint while mates are at work or out spending money they have earnt

Man up and get on with it.

The way the economy is you're going to get worse just sat at home being repeatedly pushed back when no-one wants to hire you.

Plus I'm pretty sure you won't be able to claim due to leaving your job voluntarily.

Thats a bit savage man,the OP has things not going the way he wants his life to,he is asking for advice not posts to make him worse.

In my experience, JSA is a massive fuel for depression and could simply worsen anxiety issues...

If I was you I would search for another job whilst you're working. Are you allowed to listen to music?

"make my life more awesome" -.-

How about not making it worse...

I'm not medically depressed, but I look at it like this; when I'm down, make that far far worse and then imagine being sat in a room staring at TV.
