advice on gaming pc build (noob alert)

HTPC = home theater PC; record tv, use for iplayer, play blu rays quicker than a stand alone player, music player etc

reduces the number of boxes under the tv for the price of a remote and a tv card

yes it will be used for that but its main use will be games (probably no fps)

i'm starting to think 1200 quid on this is a bit too ott as i can't afford to buy this lot outright and i am very very impatient

if possible could anyone try and spec me something that could be used straight away but easily upgraded month by month, would this be possible

maybe for around the 800 mark

as some 1 rightly stated
the SSD is a luxury rather than a necessity
you could swap for a normal HDD and that would save you
around £90 now and you can easily add 1 down the line.

the h50 ive heard is a decent watercooler for cpu, but unless
ur going to overclock you could easily get a good air cooler
that would do the business well. that could save you another £25

the i7 950 is basically entry level now if your going for an i17 build
because its so close to the 930 in price. if you want to save another
£21 you could drop to the 930 and not see the difference in games.

so you could shave another £131 off your lateast spec post
with minimal if not no performance loss.

In addition:
to get another £68 off you could drop to an EVGA 460.
but this is then starting to eat into performance and bring
th necessity for an upgrade closer, which "you" said you dont want.


now that your asking about a build around £800 throws
everything ive said and speced up in the air basically.
go i5 and 460 like the guys said to get around the £800 mark
but upgrading will be much sooner than an i7 and potential 470sli

Joe said he has no clue wot hes doing and you think hes going
to pop that 930 in and get it running better than a 950 the day he builds.
if hes going to learn to overclock then fair enuff but by the sounds of it
hes a gamer.

to suggest basically a more pricey card to rival a 470 just because "red matches the case" is complete LOL:confused:
not to mention him having to battle driver problems out of the box
if it doesnt go smooth for him. (more chance with ati than nvidia)

cheers jake, the 800 figure is just what i can spare this month i can add another 2 or 300 next month

i was not looking to overclock at first as i have no experience with it what so ever

i think going for a normal hard drive sounds like a good idea plus i'm going to need more than 64gb of space anyway. is there a good hard drive to choose or will any do?

if im not overclocking the i7 do i even need a cpu cooler or could you reccommend a cheap one just to use for say a month

basically i have decided that i want a working pc for around the 800 mark and i can spare a further 300 the following month

i will be looking to start this build in the last week of september so i have a week or so to change my mind another 3 times :rolleyes:

i'll try doing a bit of cost cutting in my shopping cart and see what you guys think

im not 100% but the i7 cpu's might come with a standard cpu fan with them
which you could use until u have extra funds available.
if some1 could confirm this for joe would be great.

seeing as your going to be 37" 1080p i wouldnt drop to the 460
i would invest in a 470 for that extra bit of bite and overall better future sli potential

but then again its me and not you so :)

spot on jake i have removed the cooler and the solid state and added you recommended hard drive

i have also removed the genuine copy of windows 7 as i have a dodgy copy i can use for a month or i think i even have a proper copy of xp i can put on for a short time

this brings me down to £980 which is achievable rather than the £1200 which i wouldn't have been able to get


is the graphics card i have chosen ok as there is that many 470s i dont know what i'm looking for

All Retail boxed processors come with a standard CPU cooler.
Only OEM processors come without. Now you can state your 100% sure :)

yes m8 that a good 1. you basically paying an extra £10 for a lifetime warranty
compared to the others. which i think is spot on for a safety net.
sli 470s could be used for more than 3years i think and other brand warrantys will be expired.

i bought my 8800gts wen it was the dogs ball licks way back.. its only
struggled in the last year really. its going on 6 years now. so i think sli 470s
could easily get close to this. thats my view of working it out

I would remove the Blu ray player...Do you own/play any blu ray movies???
I would get a cheap DVD RW for now, and get a blu ray ROM later if needed. If it main use is for gaming Blu Ray player is another luxury xD
That graphic card looks fine althou that price is in the 5870 range :/
 
The stock cooler will be 'fine' but dont dare think of OCing until you get a new cooler.
Defo think of Overclockin in the near future thou as it'll increase performance by about 10%
