Do you want to keep xp? If you do then you could dual boot, but you'll need 2 partitions(or disks) do do it.
If you just want Vista, then you can just format your xp drive and install. of course you'll loose everything on the disk. So backup to another drive or dvd.

If you install from within Windows XP you will be advised that your existing installation (XP) will be moved into a directory called 'windows old'

This means when you finally launch into Vista you'll have the entire contents of XP installation in this folder on c:\

I got rid of xp ages ago, since my vista runs great and I never used xp on dual boot. However if this is your first go on vista it might be an idea to keep xp in case you have issues (which if you give it a chance you wont) ;)
