Hello all

I am currently looking to volunteer as a counsellor to people, to gain experience. The only problem is that I know little about volunteering and I have been unable to find an oportunity that is generalised enough so I am asking whether anyone has any advice on volunteering or knows of a group that may accept volunteers for such a purpose...

Ideally I am looking to start relationship counselling, although any advice or knowledge about volunteering in general would be appreciated...

Thanks in advance...

I'm a Samaritans volunteer, and although not strictly counselling I could think of worse places to look at volunteering :) let me know if you have any questions.

i dont know what area you already work in ,but councilers need to be qualified to work ,else you could be putting ppls lives at risk with your advise ,still a good thing to get into tho as job satisfaction would be high knowing you are helping folks.

Yes, which is why often there is in-house training offered from organisations that offer volunteers or you can only volunteer as part of a placement while you are studying counselling or psychotherapy

With the ammount of relationship threads on here you need not look anywhere else for research

the last counciler i spoke to (mental health) told me the training took 2/3 yrs before you were able to work with ppl alone,i have seen trainees 'sit in' sessions so this might be something for you to enquire about if you want to get into this area of work.

ROFL - That's what sprung to my mind as well!

Again, you comment is not warranted. You know nothing of me, just as I would claim to know little about you except whichever political opinions you care to express.

I say exactly what I like on this forum, I offer you my honesty and that is a courtesy you should acknowledge given the tiny amount amount of people who are genuinely willing to admit to what they believe in this day and age.

I have never made similar comments in off-topic threads from either of you, this is a courtesy you should return.
