Please have a read of the following!

I'm 21.. and over the past 2 years have managed to get down from 16stone to 12 1/2-13stone < I float between these two.

I am very happy with the weight loss, but from my appearance I have a lot further to go in getting the 'body' that I see myself needing..

I believe that I have too much bodyfat at present due to my having too much *gut*

Now I work at home on the farm, and have recently started Kayaking up and down the canal (about 2 miles each night)

But could do with some advice on how to lower my bodyfat whilst possibly gaining muscle.

I have quite strong upper body muscle & leg muscle due to the work I do on the farm, but the rest of me is quite lacking.

My Diet.. (which is SEVERELY affected by IBS)

Breakfast - Weetabix x5 c/w sprinkling of sugar, Mug of tea with two sugars

Lunch - Two pieces of toast with butter

Evening Meal - Potatoes, Garden Peas, Either.. Beef.. Pork.. Chicken.. Fish in an adequete portion,

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the above is quite high in Carbs? is this having a bad affect on my weight loss?

Feel free to ask anything, I realise the above isn't wrote out very well.

Thanks, John.

Thats seriously all you have to eat each day? I'd say look at eating more, with more protein, good fats, and some carbs, Then using weights on top of the work on the farm and the kayaking your doing

Pretty much!

I might have the odd Bannana or Apple, two cups of coffee in a day maybe.

Sometimes I eat a little more at lunch, but its usualy more bread.

I can't stomach certain types of bread, Egg, Fatty foods, and others that I can't think of.

I suppose what I'm trying to get, is keeping my weight as it is or increasing it.. but I want to achieve a flat stomach as a minimum.

Ok, loosing weight should not be so hard, but with IBS it is more of a challenge.

What is probably going on with you is that your body had optimised so much on the tiny amount of food you are eating that reducing calories will not work at all. Also as you are so optimised, anything you do not burn will probably be stored due to the very small amount of food you are eating. I also think you are probably very low on vitamins and minerals needed for muscle gain.

So basically, for fat loss you need to burn more than you eat. Simple, but your body is very efficient so you have to up the ante and give it more to do. Cardio could be a good way to go and kayaking seems like a good move but you need to stress the body and not just take a leisurely paddle down the stream. You need to get that heart pumping. Running or mountain biking may also be good options if you are around a farm.

You also need to fuel your exercise so your body can get to an intensity that it will start to burn fat. If you can not get to that level then you are going to find it very hard to loose the fat.

Ok, so what to do about the diet......

Well I see that brown rice is ok, oatmeal (great for slow release energy), buckwheat (soba) noodles, root veg is also listed as ok here for IBS. Have a look at the site and see what else you can add. Protein is what you are aiming for. I also see eggs are ok if you stick to the egg whites only. This is good as the whites have the protein so you can eat lots of these. If you add more exercise and do not increase your diet then the body is likely to get the energy you are asking it to burn from a number of sources including your muscles.

Record the calorie values of what you are eating and try to get to at least 2000 per day in order to get your body in a good starting place. Upping to 3500 with the right foods will allow you to gain but if you are to go this route then add some weight training as this is the best for gaining muscle, in fact you can also add it for loosing fat as it will help protect the muscle being burnt for energy.

As always, get the diet sorted out first. Have a good search around the internet for what you can eat which is high protein, slow release carb and food fats (if possible with IBS).

Regards
