Advise please, ATI or Nvidea, 470 or 6970? Or Other..

Another step forward in comparison to the stock heatsink is the Super Overclock’s noise profile. One would expect that the trio of 80mm fans would need to literally scream in order to sufficiently cool the fin array but that doesn’t happen. Due to the surface area of the heatsink, all of the core’s heat is well distributed across a fairly large area which means the fans don’t need to work all that hard. The result is an amazingly quiet experience.

It's a quiet card.

I know I already come across as not knowing a huge amount about cards, but I have one question i've wondered about for a long time.

When I open my PC case, I normally see the card from above. I'm considering cutting a side window in my CM690 so this does kind of matter ( but not hugely ). Why is it, that the companies go to great efforts to put designs etc on the bottom of the card, when the top of the card is just left as a green chip?

The 470 SOC has an array of green led lights for you to admire through your window lol.

Haha, that's good. I know that sounds really dumb to ask,.. but i've always wondered why on the pictures I think yeah wow that looks great, then I get it.. it does,.. then I put it in my case... and it looks like the last card give or take an inch.

No harm in waiting to see what the new 6900 series will be like tbh. If they do turn out to be down performed then go for the 470 SOC. I'd wait personally!

Yeah it's a great price that 470, I thought the LED lights would have swung it in favor of the SOC, ah well.:p

Lights......cool..... Nah, tight scottish git mate, saved a few quid. LOL:D

To the OP, I really wanted that 470 SOC but couldn't justify the extra money. There is a really good review on a canadian site, which I cant link to but if you google 1Gb 460GTX versus Radeon 6870 you should find it.:)

Thanks for all your help!
I will wait till the new cards are out, I think that is a great idea and really appreciate it!

I quite liked the SOC, and the lights. hmm, the lights.

One more thing about graphics cards i've noticed, and.. i'm sure someone will have an answer to.

On my MSI X58M ( which is great, but i'm starting to hate it )..
If I put in another card to make it crossfire/SLI, it will almost certainly run over both the PCI I use for my wireless card ( not actually an issue anymore as I have an ethernet wired through the walls now ), and also be probably less than 1cm away from the card above.

Is it just me that thinks that it's a bit weird that the card above will have about 0 space for cooling, I know this may sound obvious, but if I was to do that, are they not just going to overheat?

THat's one reason I don't like mi MSI X58M, the other is that the northbridge gets rediculously hot, so i've had to buy an antec spot cool fan, which now adds to the noise... the noise of my PC irritates me. How come, mine at stock makes so much more noise than like,.. for example any dell you can buy. My girlfriends ( I believe running a HD 4850 ), is SO much quieter than mine.. and mine has the H-50!
Hmmmmm.

I think i've decided actually what it is, on the coolermaster CM690, I think that the grill bits that are accross the whole top and front of the case, make noise when air gets blown through it. That's the only thing I can think of as why my PC is so loud, and.. tyhe northbridge still so hot.

So,.. are they always so close together, or did I just make a bad decision with my X58M? Next motherboard I get I want to be huge, it helps with cable management in my case and also will have room for things. I can't believe I chose the X58M over the other larger mobos

Oki, sorry for all the questions, and sorry that this is now in the graphics card thread and that i've run off course ( You people are genuinly helpful ).

I maybe should upgrade my motherboard, now, if I was to do that... should I stay with the i7, or wait a while? Is it likely that there is some new fancy amazing socket coming out which will mean I wasted money? Or,.. will the future CPUs be likely to be using the 1366?
