I'm reading over my notes for an exam this afternoon, in this section on Risk Assessment it says

If the airline industry made truly rational decisions on safety, all passengers would face the back of the plane: as they do in military aircraft.

I wasn't aware they faced backwards in military aircraft (never really thought about it), why is it safer?

Btw this question isn't important to my exam, just wondering.

probably as you will be pushed into the back of your seat in a minor accident

much better than being thrown forward and hitting something

Do you mean if the plane decelerates quickly? I guess that would be one reason.

Edit : Ignore first bit, you edited your post

person flying into the back of a seat, or seat flying into the front of a person, whats worse? YOU DECIDE!

Bit OT but don't some people have a phobia of travelling backwards or something!!

I don't know if its a real phobia or not, but i've seen people really not want to sit facing backwards on trams in Blackpool (some have reversible seats).

Some people have phobias of travelling on planes at all, but I dont think they take them into account much :p

If the seats are flying around you have a pretty serious problem anyway.

the seat back has mechanisms to prevent this though and if they were rear facing this could be improved

I prefer to face forwards when travelling on any form of transport. I will sit backwards on a train if I have to, but forwards is better.
