After my first tattoo...

Hi guys after some advice/help.

I'm 18 next saturday and for a while have been thinking about getting a tattoo. I dont know the reasons why I want one, perhaps to make my body a bit more interesting or just the fact I like the way they look either way I would like one.

Ive come to the decision i'd like a 'tribal' style one on my left shoulder/arm (call me cliche if you want). Im stuck for ideas, ive had a few looks on google and found a few tribal designs. Does anybody know of any websites or have any images of shoulder tribal style tattoos?

Do you have any advice or tips? It'l be my first tattoo and probaly my last might get one on my leg in a few years time. Im expecting to pay around £100-£150 for it. A friend recently got 3 chinese symbols for bruce lee on his shoulder and he hagled it down to £80 (from £120) which I think is a bit steep.

Does anybody have any other suggestions for styles or designs?

Any help is greatley appreiciated.

If you don't know why you want one, don't have one. If you're going to get one anyway, best advice I can give is not to rush into any decisions about what to have, find a tattooist from reccomendations, and don't be afraid to ask him any questions you have.

For design ideas, just type tribal tattoo into google image search.
 
other than 'omgwtfrofllol' at 'three chinese symbols for bruce lee', get onto bme, get loads of ideas and inspiration, show your artist what you like and ask them to make something for you...

thanks for the link schofeild. And yeh penski thats what i said when i first herd. He's quite into his martial arts and love bruce lee films and it looks quite good, on the front of his arm/shoulder.
 
Im after something a little bit simpler, just plain black or dark green and just a few line/swirls or curves. Ill have a look and see if I can pick bits out of the designs I like.
 
I'm also looking at getting one. I'd like a very small one on my wrist, just one or two lines of text, but I've got no idea how much it'll cost. Any ideas?

I'm taking it that the £120 one was pretty big in size?
 
bme (google it), theres a link at the top to 'user galleries' I believe. Otherwise, tattoonow (forgot the link, I'm at work so can't check) is pretty extensive too.

i'd assume so, it was selfridges though and probaly over priced. Another friend had jesus on a cross with wings on his back and that cost £300 or there abouts.
 
my first one.....it was 2 bands and a red round oval between the 2 bands with something in the oval....on my left forarm.....that was £150 ...there not cheap...but be aware usually your first one they tend to rip you off a little.....just look fr a respectable good artist and you wont go wrong :)

kl. How much would you say one covering a small bit of chest, most of shouler and some arm would cost? around the £200 mark? whats the average hourly rate because i know sometimes they'l go on that.
 
hard to really say but personally id of thought artists vairy with price....sure the majority would be around the same..... going by what ive had done....for your shoulder/bit of chest/bit of arm id say you possibly could be looking at anywhere between £200-£300, hard to say ......also tribal designs are usually always black/white work, which if im right is usually a little cheaper as its one colour....not 100% sure tho as mines all colour...... :)


edit ..hourly rate....id probbaly say something like £50-£70.....my first one took around 2 hours and like i say was around £150...so £50-£70 ph probbaly wouldnt be far off

Usually you will have to pay a deposit of £10 per hour of work, so for an example i have a tattoo that covers my entire spine top to bottom and i paid £30 deposit and then £40 on top (special birthday rate as my friend was the artist).
Why not go look at some places and ask them about their rates, some places charge a standard hourly rate on top of the deposit it really depends on where you go others charge depending on size and detail.
It is hard to give you a price for something as it may be large but simple thus taking less time and cost less or be small but detailed so take longer costing more.
 
Thanks for the feedback, im going to go to a few parlours on friday with a friend. Were near the watford area so if anyone knows of any ones they'd recommend that'd be good.
