Who is meant to be a good defensive race for this game?

I keep going back to the English for familiarity with units.

Have been killing everyone with the english, then ran into one guy who was churning out tonnes of these massive great cannon things in the second age, no less, that just annihilated every single unit I could throw at them. No clue what race he was playing but it seemed to be either hacks or way overpowered.
