i want to change my current leadtek 128mb 6800le as its too noisey for my htpc, this was what the previous owner fitted.

anyway is the any nvidia 6600 carda or ati similar cards that are passive cooled and are agp? i dont want to lose much by changing my card so looking for something with similar performance that has agp and passive cooled.

it is for my htpc however i will require it to run games like HL2 on my 19" monitor as well as do all the other htpc things well movie playback.

Instead of swapping the card - swap the cooler for say a Zalman vf700/900 and run at 5V, much quieter

I've seen passive cooled GeForce 6600LE and the standard 6600. Though those won't offer the same performance as your 6800LE (a good card once unlocked) - a 6600GT will though if overclocked, but I've not seen a 6600GT passively cooled I'm afraid.

Gigabyte have a passivley cooled 6600GT. Gets hot though, need a well ventilated case for it.

ah a chap on another thread says he bought an artic cooler for his and he was still not happy and ended up going for the passive cooled 6600.

the prolem is all the 6600 passive cooled cards are pci-e and i have not seen an agp version.

i would be happier buying a cooler for my current card but i am reluctant incase i can still hear it as its a htpc in my living room and i want it really quiet.

thanks for all the replies ;)

Interesting, Gigabyte produce quite a few silent AGP cards.

There's a 6800 passively cooled and it looks huge. :)

Link to Gigabytes page:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Products_List.aspx?VenderType=NVIDIA&BUSType=AGP&BUSSpeed=8

Passively cooled cards are listed! :)

yes but none of the are agp they are all pci-e

which is the best/ quietest cooler for my 6800le, the zalman vf700 or vf900 or the artic cooler?

i might just go with one of these coolers and take a chance, i sure hope it is going to be quiet enough.

Anyone know how easy it is to get off the Leadtek cooling solutions on the 6800NU/LE's ?

They look pretty big and complicated (with all that copper).

There's four screws on the back that you take off, then you just take the copper cooler off each side.

Simple really :)

Hey sare^baw's, is it a Shuttle htpc you got?

I'm interested in modding a X1600 with the Zalman VF900 to fit my Shuttle SB61G2.

Let us know how it goes and if its worth it :D

Just FYI, Thermaltake (yes I know, YUCK!!) do fanless heatsinks with heatpipes for gfx cards. I have one on my 6600GT and it keeps it cool, and i think there is another one, The Schooner CL-G0009 VGA cooler, that has a radiator type thing that comes out of the back of your case (it's all connect via heatpipes).

I'm not too sure how well these things would cool a X1900XTX :D , but for older gfx cards and maybe even the 7600/7900 series, they'd probably work well.

just for an update, i bought the vf900 zalaman and im more than happy with it, i have it set to low so its nice and quiet. thanks to all for their input . pc is much quieter as it seems the fan on the 6800 was making the most noise.
