I am personally in favour of it and am certain other air lines will be adopting this scheme.

A plane ticket should entitle you to 100kg including baggage and self.

I do like the idea of paying by weight. So you get a total allowance of a set figure for both you and luggage.

When you send things to places, you pay by weight, makes sense to me!

Business decision, fine with me.

I'd be entirely opposed to regulation to make this the case across the board however.

So you dont think its fair charging by weight? Thats what costs the airline money, the more you weigh, and the larger you are, the more space you take up, and fuel you use!

Surely that is for the airline to decide what charging structure provides the best profit/attraction approach overall?

If you cannot fit in 1 seat then you pay for how many you need.

Weight is irrelevant.

If you think it is relevant, then prepare to pay per the kilo of yourself AND luggage. Need to take more? Pay more. Didn't go to the toilet before boarding? That's another kilo - pay up.

You cant expect to get carte blanch on anything UP TO a certain limit but preach that more weight = more fuel/associated running costs.

if they charge by weight I would imagine that they would leave themselves open to a sex discrimination accusations

I think it's a great idea, although if it was already in place I would have missed one of the funniest experiences I've had.

Was flying back from Turkey, and I got the extra leg room seats by chance (they screwed up our seats), and got sat next to these two huge tubs of lard. They cleared about 5 bags of sweets before we hit the runway.

Anyway, these front seats have the arm loaded tables rather than drop down ones in front of you. I nearly wet my pants when they had to forgo their in-flight meal because they couldn't fit the table over their bellies.

No I do not think it is fair.

The same could be said for all forms of transport. Hotels (as obese people stress the bed more). What about swimming pools as they displace more water meaning more run-off needs to be retreated and circulated?

Charge them if they occupy more than one seat by all means. But charging by weight is reprehensible.

LOL @ skinny people that have and will post in this thread. This is all.

Excellent input, great work.

Presumably you're insinuating that all the skinny people will be lording it up over the fatties as another victory of the media instilled idealism of Boney = Best. I think that's what you were attempting to put across anyway...

An interesting viewpoint. I'm not skinny. Infact, I'm a touch overweight given my cmplete lack of height, but i'm not going to be able to argue with the fact that if you use two seats, it's unfair you only pay for one. It's not prejudice, it's not segregation, it's not an -ism of any kind. It's just a fact. Each seat costs X. If you use two, you pay 2*X.

Edit:
Ah i see you've carlified your position regarding the Charge by Weight idea. My post isn't redundant though, it's just no longer targetting yours.

Depending how far they want to go with definition of obesity they will be missing 20-30% passengers in their country. Sacredieu! Serves the stupid corporation right.

Charging by weight is silly and unmanageable tbh

Charging big people for 2 seats is perfectly reasonable imo, it makes a better traveling experience for all involved tbh

Say what you like about the French....this is a long overdue and awesome idea. Sucks for the people who are just huge and not at all fat, but that's life.

Now if we can just do something about the seemingly compulsory crying babies then flying might just about become bearable!
