Ive just bought one so i can share my hardrive and printer between my mac and PC but heard it dont have its own modem and ill need to plug it into my existing routers ethernet port.

Does the extreme have its own built in modem or do i need to plug this into my netgear router:confused:

Thanks

I'm not a Mac guy (yet) but just had a look on the Apple Store UK website as I was interested in this:

AirPort Extreme Base Station - Has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for a DSL or cable modem.

So yes, I think it requires a DSL or cable modem.

If you're on ADSL pick up a Linksys AM200 or something, they're about 20 notes and can be setup to be a modem-only, passing the external IP onto the Airport, so you don't do any nasty double-NATing.

My feeling would be that the netgear dg834g can't act as the modem for the AirPort Extreme, but I could be wrong. You would need a separate modem for the AirPort if you wanted it to distribute an internet connection.

Ahh ok thanks guys.

I thought it had its own modem built in allowing me to get rid of my netgear router.

I'm with Caged on this one.

Though, it'd probably not be too difficult to set up your existing router as a modem, you'd probably get more from selling the router than the cost of a standalone modem :)
