Airport Extreme : Is it just a bit rubbish

Not comparable though, loads of environmental factors to take into account affecting throughput on wireless. You can only truly compare in the same location at the same time.

That said, Airport devices in general have been really very good in my experience, I've not seen anything under £200 that comes close overall. We buy £300 Cisco units for branch offices at work and they're no better really, and compared to various other cheap APs and wireless routers it's worlds better. Good devices.

I somehow doubt that if I can get 15MB/sec next to my 4 year old one and he can only get 3MB/sec next to his that the environment isn't the issue.

If there is some environmental thing that is causing it then no router will be able to operate correctly.

Also given I can go through two, foot thick walls and still get more than he is getting suggests something is amiss, no?

[Note: My AEBS is the only 5GHz network in range and there are about 10 802.11b/g networks around here]

Edit 1: If that review is to be believed then the current AEBS is worse than the older single radio ones :o

Yeah I tend to agree, just don't understand why I have such poxy throughput.

I expect MUCH better speeds, at least 100MB/s.

That would be nice but I wasn't expecting that high over wireless, I was hoping for 20MB/s +.

My experience of the Airport Extreme is simply that it's the best wireless router I've ever used. I'm not just saying that out of fanboyism but before I got mine I'd had used Netgear, Linksys and Draytek wireless routers and the AE blew them away with significantly better wireless range and superior speed.

+1 as well as the above it happens also to be nice to look at rather than your typically less atheistically pleasing alternatives.

Having Macs (and an Apple TV and iPad) that support 5Ghz Wide mode is awesome. Keeps all the slow traffic off my wi-fi network.

Maybe my unit is just faulty in some way, might just get it exchanged.

There are no other 5ghz networks around me and I'm sitting about 3 feet away from the AEBS and I'm getting 3MB/sec.

I improved performance on the extreme by setting each band a fixed channel and creating a separate SSID for the 5GHz band. I'll do a test later to give speeds but I'm connected at the full 450Mb/s. I was only getting a connection of 217Mb/s when I let the extreme auto manage everything.

I also used a WiFi analyser app on my Desire to find the quietest bands to use. For reference my Mac sits on the other side of a 3 bed house detached house when I get these speeds. Obviously I get better signal and throughput the closer I am to the router.

In case you guys weren't aware that in the UK (and a few other countries) the use of the "Wide Channels" feature isn't permitted. Therefore if you tick the "Wide Channels" box in the 5ghz setup screen it won't do anything.

To get around this simply select "Italy" as your country of residence in Airport Utility.

I found this information from various articles dating back to 2007/2008, I changed my country to Italy when I first bought my TC and it did make a difference.

Be warned though doing this might upset your neighbours if you start interfering with their wireless signals. :)

Mines set as wide channels and "United Kingdom" is selected.

I think a recent firmware update changed it.
