Airport Security Checks to stay...

:( In the news this morning, they look set to stay even if technology improves with the detection of liquid explosives.

I am no longer looking forward to going on my booked holidays now, airports and the time taken was already enough.

I only hope that not all countries, in the long term, have to take those measures. Or they have won!

Yeah I am thinking of taking another week off when I go to my mums, as I do like the road so a trip across France into Spain would be not too much of a 'misfortune'! ;)

Shame really, as I was wanting to go a nice holiday far away next year, see how it all pans out I suppose. But they seriously will have to do something with airport security. It just cannot cope at its current level

This is at a time where the government is cutting back on Customs staff and other frontline staff. Vast miles and miles of this countries coastline are not protected. France has some 50 Cutter vessels, UK has three.

The borders of this country are pourous.

Insurance of valuables will be a big thing/problem as holiday insurance policies are pretty weak at the best of times. Best thing will be to ensure adequate household contents insurance is in place.

My family still asks me why I don't like flying even after all of this

Just checked with Aldergrove and apparently I can take 1 item of hand baggage, so long as it's less than 45cm long, 35cm wide and 16cm deep, pathetic.

I told you so, it has nothing to do with terrorism. Another one of my predictions comes true.

Here is another:

Within a year there will be another attack or a foiled attack and they will introduce more draconian measures to control the sheep.

Great. Muslim extremists inconveniencing us infidels again. Why airport security don't just target people who are more likely to try and blow things up is beyond me. And before anyone says "ah, but some of the terrorists were white British converts" I don't recall them being disguised as Mr and Mrs Chav with their Chav kids all in football shirts flying to Spain.

Completely agree.

Shame the pc brigade will make sure this won't happen.

Anyone know what the checks are like for internal flights?
We're going to Belfast for one night next month so we don't need to take a lot - a change of clothes would fit in our hand luggage normally and would avoid extra charges for using the hold.
Are they likely to put a stop to this?

I really don't get what the fuss is about. I flew from Paris-Manchester on Wednesday. I had to take my shoes off and put them through the X-ray machine, then someone went through my hand luggage with gloves and layed it all out on a table. Finally I was taken to one side and told to empty my pockets and was then strip searched. All that probably added an extra five minutes and the flight left on time. It's no big deal, just make sure you get to the airport a bit earlier and don't take liquids.

I'm flying next Friday and was hoping to take a lot of camera gear with me but it looks like it'll have to stay at home now :( :(

Aldergrove (Belfast International) see my post above, you might want to check with the airport you're departing from just in case they have a different security policy in effect.

Cheers, I'm flying to the City airport but I've emailed them and Newcastle Airport to see what their policy is.

Did you know that MI5 and the CIA detonated those bombs in London?

The fuss, in my case is not about the extra time and searches. I have for many years been an advocate of the Israeli security checks and believe we should have implemented them years ago.

For me it's about the totally illogical security measures they have just because they have to be seen to be doing something even if it is totally flawed.

Why is the new carry on size any safer than the old one? Maybe it's just a coincidence that it is laptop size so not to upset a very large part of the air industry's income, the business traveller.

Why strip you of all liquids groundside then allow you to buy up loads more airside? Barmy when airside workers are not as well checked as the passengers. How hard is it to smuggle stuff airside when you work there?

Why on earth did they inflict the same security on the air-crew? I mean, if they wanted to kill a few 100 people as well as themselves they've had plenty of opportunity to do it without hair-gel and toothpaste. Steering the plane into the ground does a good job.

Why should I put my expensive belongings in to the hold when they've been telling us for decades not to? They cannot guarantee that my baggage will get to its destination intact, whether by physical damage or theft. Apparently reported theft from luggage went up 200% at Gatwick alone during that week. In fact, I would be happy to put my £7000 of camera gear in the hold in a locked hardcase if BAA could guarantee the honesty of their own staff and the security of my gear, but they can't! How did Heathrow get the nickname Thiefrow? Surely it cannot be undeserved? If they can't stop the thieving, what makes them think they can stop a terrorist attack airside from one of their own staff in the future?

I could rant on a bit longer, but you get the picture. ;)

And just to stress once more, I'm all for Israeli style security. They haven't had a hijacking or lost a plane in decades. I know it takes even longer, and I don't have a problem with checking in even earlier.
