I was recommended this book by a close friend of mine. I bought it and read it straight away and as I'd been told by many people, I didn't find it easy. I read it another two times a few weeks ago and still don't "see" what he's trying to put across.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone on here has managed it with the book? And more for my personal research, has someone read the book and failed, and as a consequence gone to a clinic? What was it like, and are you a non-smoker now?

i read the book 2 days ago, and now i don't smoke anymore.

you have to understand what he is trying to communicate in the book, once you understand it properly, you will not be a smoker anymore, because what keeps you still a smoker now, are common illusions that he destroys in the book.

without them illusions, you will have no choice but not to smoke.

it really is that easy and logical.

it worked for me.

I completely understand what you're saying, and I understand what he says too, but I just can't do it. I don't know why, but it feels as if I'm doing it on the will-power method, which I have tried on numerous occasions and failed. Difficult to explain.

Congratulations on quitting to the both of you anyway.

as far as i can tell the audio book is just what the one 2 one clinic meeting is like.

it wasn't until the final chapter of the book i threw all my tobacco in the bin, and all my paraphernalia . you have no idea how liberating that felt.

the reason i wanted to quit smoking, was not money or health, it was how imprisoned i felt by the addiction, anytime i was going out i had to check to see if i had enough tobacco for the journey etc etc etc.

now im free of that, and it is just amazing how it feels.

you have no idea until you escape the slavery of smoking, how much your life improves, mostly your energy levels , mentality , mood.

give it another go, nothing to lose. man i had been a smoker for 10 years , and the book reversed that in 10 hours.

Yeah, smoking gets me down. Like the book says really. I'm 24 now and I've been smoking since I was 15, long time if I think about it

Alan Carr from the Friday Night Project? I'm surprised to see he's discouraging people from sucking on fags.

I want to stop smoking, but I enjoy it. It's not as if I wake up on a morning coughing and spluttering, or run for a bus and get out of breath and think "damn those ciggies". But I do actually enjoy it.

I smoke Amber Leaf, costs about £2.60 and that's with papers, and only buy two packets a week so that's £5.20 a week on cigs. The stop smoking aids are nearly 3 times as much as that so whilst it's common sense to say stopping smoking is good for me, it's just harder when I know I'd be worse off financially if I took the alternatives.

I would say that's too short a space of time to actually announce that you've given it up as you've yet to experience the long term effects of going without cigarettes and truly test your willpower.

Give it two months at least, then see how you are...

No discouragement meant to you tho, best of luck

It's about four days for the nicotine to leave your system. After that it's all mental, and if you believe the book, it's got nothing to do with willpower and everything to do with fear.

At least that's the theory. I don't know anyone who's tried to quit using the Allen Carr method, so don't know how successful it is. I'm a non-smoker and read the book while trying to convince my parents to quit. It's definitely an interesting read whether it works for you or not.

i don't find anything precious about cigarettes so there is nothing for me to give up, and i have got loads to gain.

so yes i have been a non smoker for 2 days, but im not using willpower, that would suggest there is something good to need will power for.

all the positives about smoking i previously believed are now understood to be illusions and i have no reason whatsoever to smoke.

oh btw, its 'allen' carr the other is alan carr 'comedian' who is one annoying fk*r.

if you enjoy it, then why do you want to stop? and why cant you stop?

there are other things in your life that you enjoy that you can easily stop at anytime, why not smoking?

the only thing you enjoy is the relief from needing the nicotine fix and thats because you like i was are a nicotine addict.

you think its enjoyment but its not , the cigarette is the cause and the relief, what your enjoying is the relief from that void you get when your brain needs more nicotine, not the cigarette itself.

I agree 100% what you're saying, really I am. Of course "I" don't enjoy it, but I'm made to believe I enjoy it.

Still not easy though.

If I'm busy I can generally get by nearly all day without having one. But at work, say if I make a drink for folks, while I waiting for the kettle to boil, I'll nip outside to kill 5 mins.

It's like just now. I didn't NEED one, I didn't WANT one, I've literally gone into the kitchen, put the kettle on, had a kit kat and thought "Check emails, play on the xbox, look at the forum, check the news? Nar, nip for a ciggie and kill 5 mins".

It's just the thought of having 5 mins 'spare' in life and not knowing how to fill it, so I'll have a fag.
