alfa 159 1.9 jtd vs golf 1.9 tdi

The 159 is a good car, I moved to one (in 2L Diesel form, TI spec) from a 2.0TDI MkV Golf.

The 159 is a much much nicer thing to look at and a vastly better place to be inside. I only had mine for 6/7months from brand new and so I didn't get chance to break it but the economy was significantly lower than the Golf could do.

Between the 159 and the Mk4, if you can get a TI or a Lusso I would get the 159 and put some cash aside for the inevitable bills but try and get either a petrol or the 2L or 2.4 5cyl diesel engines. The 1.9 isn't that good really.

Some banger Mk1 Leon based on a design thats almost 15 years old, better than the Golf V?

Are you on drugs?
Ah, the good old Mark we used to know and love.
I suspect you might be the one on drugs.
You can pick up a 55 plate (so that's a banger, obviously) for less than the OP's budget, thereby saving him a few quid.
It's quicker and a nicer place to be than a Golf V (IMO).
If he was looking at 2.0s, I wouldn't have suggested it, but he's looking at the 1.9!

Seriously, the Golf V isn't all that fantastic now is it? Certainly not in 1.9 105 bhp form.
Care to explain why it was only produced for 6 years, against the 8 years of the Mk III and IV?

No contest is it?
Have some

not really keen on the old mk1 leons as think for the money they look dated compared to what you can get and ive seen the mk2 fr at 6k ish.

at the moment im keeping an eye out for both cars but think i might need to try and get a test drive somehow and see which i prefer

I have a facelift Leon FR 2.0 tdi CR170. The interior was changed a bit but mostly to add features as far as I can see, it's still fairly average but I never really brought the car for that. The FRs IIRC came with more stuff as standard post facelift and if you can find it I'd recommend getting one post suspension change (was made softer as the original mk2s were about as giving as rocks) or at least consider changing them over for a couple of hundred, the difference is pretty big. Even better would be after the switchover to CR engines as the PD + DPF is fine (as long as you give it a beating now and then) but as WJA96 said - just not as refined and you may need a regen in the timeframe of ownership depending on how you drive.
