Surely Fergie realises we need to get one of these top young players in sooner rather than later?

If we don't get Hazard I want Neymar.

Neymar is pretty much a done deal to Barca from what I've read.

tbf to Fergie it's not through want of trying, if you believe the media then we were certainly interested in Benzema & Ozil before they went to Madrid and Sanchez before he went to Barca last summer. Thing is though isn't Hazard's fee something like £30m+? It's a big ask to pay that amount on someone unproven in our league.

If I had to bet I'd say Gaitan is the one more likely of the two and unfortunately he's the one that's looked pretty average in the few games I've seen him this season.

After the two Bilbao games though if we're going to spend insane amounts of money on someone unproven in the PL I'd much rather throw everything we have at Martinez or Herrera as they look exactly the types of players we need more than another wide/attacking player

Hazard won't go to Real, he'll come to England. He's said he wants to play every game, so I doubt he will go to City. Arsenal/Spurs/Utd imo.

A lot of 'sources' seem sure that we'll be signing Nathaniel Clyne in the summer, anyone seen him regularly enough to make an opinion on whether he can make the step up?

Nobody has mentioned M'Vila, I think I read somewhere that Rennes offered him a long term contract and said if he accepts it then they will agree to sell him on the following year (this summer). Is he actually any good though?

He's an absolute beast on FM, so he must be good. :p

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Burnley midfielder Keith Treacy and Newcastle striker Nile Ranger on loan until the end of the season.

Boom. Actual transfers. (well loans but still :p)

Ranger and Madine up front, sparks will fly (literally Richard)

Wengers knowledge and scouting in France is incredible :)

Indeed, It used to be a stick to beat us with, saying we were full of French players/foreigners but if that's the area that the manager is most familiar with then of course there will be more players or more interest in players that are from that region. Moving on with transfer news now at the risk of our posts being deleted... :p

Vertonghen would be nice, I'm not sure if he would feature in the starting line up if Koscielny and Vermaelen were fit, but he'd be a great backup and a much bigger jump in quality than Squillaci/Djourou. We'd have a decent choice of backup CB's in Mertesacker and Vertonghen, or Wenger could even choose to rearrange the midfield and play him there somehow. Bit of a pipe dream though as I highly doubt we'd sign him anyway. Though he did make a comment recently about his agent knowing which clubs he would want to move to, and Arsenal are one of them: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2116655/Jan-Vertonghen-I-want-join-Arsenal.html

Still haven't heard anything about Podolski since all that excitement a few days ago. :(

Everyone's being very coy, so it could be all done and Arsenal are trying not to unsettle the end of his season in Germany, or it could be that we're nowhere near done, and there's terms to agree still.

In short, I don't have a clue.

Also, I was sorely tempted to start an "Eden Hazard blah blah blah" thread, because all this talk of where he'll end up is BORING ALREADY.

VErtongen would be an improvement over out backup but, first team is Verm/Kos, Mertesacker is on around 80k a week and we have little to no chance of offloading him, Djourou just got another new contract and is of Wenger's "favourites" and Squillaci even Wenger has given up on. However what we're doing right now is essentially stuck with Squillaci but got Mertesacker anyway, no chance we're going to get another top CB, as in no chance at all. Squillaci being off the books if we can manage that just brings us to 4 CB's of which 2 are very highly paid and two are making a decent wage, no room for anyone else but younger/cheap CB's like Miquel.

Podolski, is to a degree unfortunately having a fantastic season, theres going to be more interest this year than before and he might get better offers, he might just decide he prefers Germany. Not to mention the Euro's, clubs and players often wait till after a cup as clubs go a bit mental over anyone that has a decent international cup performance.

Hazard, could be fantastic but Nasri looked much more "epic" while playing in the french league, as do most people playing over there, 30mil odd is a big risk on that kind of a player. Can only really see him being seduced by the money eventually, Real, Bayern maybe, City, Utd possibly. If Robben ends up leaving Bayern they'd definately be in the market for that kind of player and they have the money, huge club.

As for Wenger's French league/french players knowledge, Nasri played out well because a stupid club paid us too much, Diaby, Traore, Squillaci, Gervinho, Chamakh, Sagna, sure theres a few youth players I've missed out but, by and large the vast majority of recent buys having anything to do with France, have been crap.

Still not seen any real indication Santos is any good and Gibbs is still made of Glass, left back is a key area to strengthen, and if not Podolski then another winger. Again we'll probably have little chance of offloading Gervinho, and AOC should be getting more games, but that basically leaves us with AOC/Walcott and one of those is useless.

Arsenal could do with selling Gervinho, Chamakh, Squillaci, Diaby, Denilson at the least. Vela/Bendtner if they won't get given games as well.

If they wanted to, Arsenal could probably offload Mertesacker - sure, people might not want to match his full wages, so Arsenal may have to chip in £20k/week for a while, or they could just sell him for free/a reduced price. Whilst there's the fact that he'll want to stay in the Germany squad, so if he was frozen out at club level he'd probably agree to move for lower wages, anyway... so Arsenal might not even have to contribute anything. I think they'd just keep him, though.

The biggest problem with offloading Mertesacker aside from wage/price, is Wenger, when was the last time he admitted a mistake took a hit and got rid of a player a year later? Denilson begged to leave, and went out on loan, Diaby doesn't want to leave, but should have been gotten rid of, he flat out refuses to give Vela a chance and he's still an Arsenal player, Squillaci is maybe the clearest one of the bunch.

I just don't see him getting shot of him after one season, nor Gervinho, so far both have offered absolutely nothing to the team.

Really? REALLY? Damnit. Treacy is awesome, Wednesday are now proprietors of the best left foot in League One (for the rest of the season that is). Genuinely surprised he's surplus to requirements at Burnley.

Oh, and thanks for Morrison. 3 goals in 20-odd games is pretty much better than we're averaging at the moment

I can see Vertonghen happening - can whack Vermaelen out to LB when there are the inevitable LB injuries, then slot Vertonghen in at CB... can play him in midfield... can put him at LB (rather than shifting Verm out there), etc. He'd also give Arsenal something more when it comes to corners/set pieces. Then his price isn't going to be ridic, 'cause he's only going to have year left on his contract.

I wouldn't want to get rid of him. Fair enough he's a bit weird, but he is nowhere near as bad as DM makes out. Give me a choice of Mertesacker or Djourou/Squillaci.. And well, you know how that one is going :p

A choice of Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Mertesacker and Koscielny would be a good thing. Arsenal would finally have 4 capable CB's, and with their injury record, that kind of depth is very much needed.

Edit: This obviosuly means I want to send Squillaci and Djourou to the glue factory.
