All Tesla Patents Are Belong To Us

Yup no need to worry about patents until you have a profitable venture and not at all if it was for research or doesn't pan out, seems reasonable to me.

So exactly the same as now except once you've got your profitable venture instead of having a set and fair licensing agreement for thier ip they turn around and go "accept these cripplingly unfair terms or we take you to court for patent infringement"

Isnt this so telsa supercharge stations become the industry standard? so even if it becomes a profitable business they wouldnt want to come after you. I imagine that is what most of the patents will be referring to (standardising the stations, connections to the car etc)

Props to them, whatever the legalities. More companies should do this; seeing Apple and Samsung go at each other over swipe to unlock etc is just boring and a complete waste of time and development for them, other manufactures and customers.

Erm no - that's not what it says at all. Acting in "good faith" doesn't mean you can't make money. Their press release even cites the example of large car manufacturers being able to use Tesla technology.

And that's the whole point of them releasing the technology for anyone to use. It's the right step to take as well.

It simply removes barriers to anyone (including big car manufacturers) from using the technology rather than investing in their own, the hope is that by doing this it will encourage others to begin to take advantage of that technology and produce more electric cars.

Hopefully it'll bear fruit. Since the announcement, both Nissan and BMW want talks on cooperating on charging network. The only caveat on charging parents is "free" use of the charging networks. Just like Tesla they have to offer a one off payment then free use of all stations. Which makes sense, so all cars can use the same network for "free" rather than some paying, some free etc.

A report from Financial Times citing undisclosed sources, say that for the purpose of crafting up some universal vehicle charging standards, both Nissan and BMW are interested in working with Tesla. One of the sources told FT, “It is obviously clear that everyone would benefit if there was a far more simple way for everyone to charge their cars.”

It is possible that the said partnership involves the companies using Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s proprietary charging setup in both companies’ cars while it is also possible that the collective brain trust of all three companies together will be used to come up with an inventive way to charge electric vehicles quickly.

I know Elon Musk is a business man and somewhere in this will be a motive to make money. However, I think think he's also doing this for the right reasons and that's to increase the take up of electric vehicles.

Remember that this is a guy who made enough money to retire forever off of Paypal but instead invested it all in space research and getting the human race off of using fossil fuels for transportation. He owns.

He's a goodun that Elon Musk fella.

Maybe, but he's smarter than philanthropic. So this garners some good faith and media coverage, bonus. What's really happening here is he is influencing the market. Electric adoption isn't happening fast enough, while he builds one of the largest and most advanced battery production facilities in the US.

There are still major barriers for mass adoption of electric cars. Bring the major automotive players on side, spread the costs and watch your marketplace grow significantly.

TLDR 1% of nothing is nothing, 1% of the future is a lot.
