All time best EPL team?

Quite surprised that nobody has picked Gerrard. I mean the way I read the OP we were supposed to pick players based on their prime, ie. judging players by their skill at their prime not judging them by their team as a whole. Maybe I read it wrong though.

You may have a point but if I had to choose between Scholes, Keane, Vieira or Gerrard, Stevie would come in 4th place I'm afraid.

Feel free to post what you think though :)

I know most peoples premiership teams will have mainly premier league winners in there, but Sami Hyypia would be in my defense or on the subs bench at least. Henchoz and Sami did form a great partnership for a few years, but Sami's presence is still missed even now at Anfield.

^^ Terry and ferdinand?? Ferdinand was riddled with errors in his early years, and has done very well to stamp them out recently and is englands most consistent CB now. Never really rated Terry tbh. And Bale has had half a good season!!!

Terry at his very best, which we're picking players based on, has been excellent. I definitely wouldn't pick him based on average performance though.

I'd take Gerrard over Scholes, simply for his drive and ability to turn a match on its head.

I guess my 11 would be...

Reina (Schmeichel would be a very close second, he has the medals but I actually think that in terms of raw skill Reina is better)

Cole
Terry
Adams
Neville
Giggs
Cantona
Gerrard
Beckham
Henry
Drogba

(my backups would probably be Carragher, Hyppia, Carvalho, Keane, Torres, Alonso (again, like I say, if we are supposed to be picking players based on their skill at their prime and not just the ones from winning teams...I cannot believe anyone would leave out Alonso in there somewhere surely?? ) , Mascherano and about 20 other players :D )

So basically, we're talking United circa '99 and Arsenal circa '04 in one team? And stuff the rest?

Seems fair to me.

EDIT: Hahaha, picking Reina over Schmeichel. Brilliant.

It's extremely difficult to do that although if you stretch the boundaries slightly to include players who weren't necessarily at their peak in the EPL but were exceptional players then the choice becomes even harder 'cos then you can include players like Gascoigne who may be like watching a train wreck off the pitch but he could play a little. For the record my subs would probably be Seaman, Keown, Viera, Zola and Solskjaer. It's not necessarily the most talented team of all time but they're all winners - honourable mention also to Matt Le Tissier, if he could have been bothered he'd have been a hell of a player, even at half pace which is where he seemed to spend much of his time he was pretty great.

You can't have Irwin at RB you dozy sweaty :D

Who says? I've just decided that if only he'd played there more he'd have been better than anyone else. I knew I'd make a silly mistake somewhere in there. Although actually I blame nydryl. :p

Ok then Gary Neville at his best takes the place of Irwin.

Pretty much, bar sticking Ronaldo in there.

To suggest players from any other team is laughable.

Gerrard over Keane or Vieira?

Really? An angry scouser who doesnt have a best position over two of the greatest midfielders not just that the league has ever seen, but that the WORLD has ever seen?
My sides!!

Mmmmmmm Cantona in midfield

You seem to be basing your team around your love for Liverpool old bean ;)

Its more a case that I really really liked Cantona and would want him in my team, besides, who said he was in midfield, I didnt, I was very careful specifically not to place positions next to the names :) I just listed him there. I could play 4-3-3 :)

Seems fair enough to me, I explained my decision that I think that Reina is actually a better goalkeeper than Schmeichel. Besides, I viewed the idea as YOUR best 11, thereby indicating that it was personal opinion and that there was no single right answer. Maybe I am wrong though, maybe personal opinion doesnt enter into it and there is a correct 11 and anyone who doesnt pick those 11 is wrong.

Oh definitely, I wasn't arguing against it, it just makes for very predictable team sheets.

I'd say picking a bench full of players who've only really challenged for the title once or twice in their careers, as opposed to dominated the division like those teams we mentioned, is even more ridiculous than picking Gerrard.

Oh don't get me wrong, I would shoehorn him into any side but you need to weigh up the balance. A midfield of Gerrard, Giggs and Beckham? come on :p

Now if you had gone for a midfield of Keane, Gerrard and Vieira I would have agreed :)

Nah, I dont need to weigh up the balance because all I am doing is picking the 11 players I would want wearing my shirts from the EPL era, I am not picking a team to play week in and week out for 5 seasons. Hence I am not going into balance, formations, tactics, playstyles, training schedules, managers, coaches, set pieces and so on. :)
